Early VW Bug Part

In going through my parts from an early bug restoration I ran across the following part. Not sure it was ever on the vehicle or part of the spare parts sent along from the seller. Any help identifying it would be appreciated.

looks like a spare tire bracket for an early 1960's Mercedes Benz

I did a little research on line and it does appear to be a Mercedes Benz spare tire clamp.
