Hello all
need help installing a separate warning light for hot oil gauge.
I just bought one of those hot oil sensors - dip sticks .(save my bug) And I would like to install it on a separate light. (not through the dummy light)
Not sure how to go about it..I'm kinda a newbie to my cars electrical system. But I'm really good at following instructions.....
I have the extra bulb and twist on bulb holder to install behind the speedo ..maybe using the ATF hole....(1971 ghia)
I emailed the company I bought it from...a few months ago...no response..☹️
any tips or input would be greatly appreciated..
Thanks in advance For your help

So based off these diagrams from 1971:

You probably want to grab this off the secondary side of fuse 1 or 2.
Avoid fuses 9/10 as they are always hot (the side of the fuseblock with the most red wires). Good luck - there are lots of other systems fighting for +12VDC in that area : )
If you feel ambitious you could follow a trace from 1 or 2 and see if there is a +12VDC line on a device closer to the install point of your light. For instance there is a +12VDC that hits E15 (the rear defogger switch).
I can't imagine the current draw on a dipstick sensor is much, but a good engineer would calculate the maximum wattage on this circuit to make sure any series components are rated for the heat dissipation..etc. _________________ 1974 Ghia Coupe |

edit - the draw would be from the light - the dipstick is just a switch that creates continuity to ground. My mistake. _________________ 1974 Ghia Coupe |

Hooked it up this weekend and works like a charm... i used the empty slot behind the speedo for the ATF function... now it will light up red if it gets too hot..
Thanks again for your help (tjschmidty + scotty timmerman) |

I might have to add one of these myself...after my 1974 get's back on the road this spring after a 19 year hiatus. _________________ 1974 Ghia Coupe |
