Am trying to identify a split case transaxle with only 6 digits. There are smaller markings around the S/N. Is there any significance to the smaller markings? If so where can I find a list to decode?
Thanks

You can look at the "rear axle" numbers in the Beetle VIN listing here

A-210585 is early 1954? Did I do that correct?

Yes, it looks like March, 1954 to me from the listing

True that!! thank you so much Everett!!
Now what do I do with the parts?
I’m between Toledo and Detroit if anyone needs some internals I can crack it open for inspection

Note: transaxle was purchased from a local scrap yard nosecone, shifting shafts, axles and non numbered half of case are unusable.

It sounds messed up, maybe from weather damage?

I guess post an ad saying it's for parts.

I'm not sure what parts people might need but it's possible there are internal parts someone might need for another transmission rebuild.

I’m in the middle of Detroit /Toledo, but it kinda sounds like it needed to be in the scrap yard😁. If the axles weren’t junk, I would like them. Side gears and fulcrums maybe?

Now that I think about it, March 1954 is a "smooth case" transmission.
This was changed later in 1954.

It should look like this 1954 transmission case I had rebuilt for my '54 truck year ago

It's more "smooth" looking than later ones.

Anyway, I think some of the internals parts are different too, although you said one 1/2 of the case is junk? The internals might be messed up too.

I think the large main shaft inside is different, for one thing

Later case

It might be hard to tell but the earlier case has less ribs and impressions along the side

Main shaft is the long piece on the left here
