I drove all around the state (again) and saw three Bay Window Buses. Two were running. The one in Jackson I've seen a few times... looks like it's still being cared for, which is nice.
I saw a second one (red) in Cody.
Here they are:
Jackson
Cody
Encampment
For the last one, apparently the guy used to (or still does sometimes) "restore" VWs. He had a decent looking Bug in his yard and a second one that was a rolling shell. The Bus had very old Colorado plates on it and was somewhat complete but wasting away. The motor gone and a tranny was in the front seat.
As a bonus, I saw this Splittie "Shorty" outside Cody:

we just completed a 6,800 mile roadtrip from NY to Yellowstone and back..
traveling as little interstate as possible,
saw 2 Bays.. 7 vanagons, 7 eurovans (didn't count Rialta's)
and one of the 2 was the Bay that's always in front of the Zuma Natural food store in Mancos, CO
you Bay guys need to get them out on the roads more..
guess that goes for me, but there's no way I would have taken my 71 on the same trip. _________________

ME TOO! I saw that split clown car on our trip... just outside of town. The vanagons on the road outnumbered bays 2 to 1. Missoula Montana has a decent number as well as northern Michigan. _________________ "Always waiting for tomorrow ruined everything"

I saw a few Vanagons and Eurovans but none of them had Wyoming plates.
I saw three Beetles (one not running).
The Shorty is in Greybull, WY. _________________ "I spud therefore I yam." |

We go to Cape Cod every summer for a week or two, and one of the traditions has always been AC vw spotting. Since we got the bus, it has morphed into count the buses. First year, over a dozen spotted with plenty of punch buggy thrown in. This year, not including ours, 3 bus, 1vert.

I see a lot of various buses and such on the way to work and back in the summer but a fair number of these are tourists coming and going from the Maine beaches (lots of Canada ones), Acadia National Park, and a few likely from Foreign Auto Supply in Harpswell/Brunswick. Still there are a few daily drivers around Portland area also. |

It's not easy driving a big shoe box with a little engine in that windy land. They don't even consider it wind till it hits 40.
In college a friend was driving her 77 westy around a curve in Douglas. The wind flipped her right over. Like literally 360 degrees, landed back on the tires. Broken mirror and a cracked luggage rack. But that was enough for her. Bye Bye Bussy. |

Proper tires make all the difference. _________________ If you haven't bled on them, you haven't worked on them.

I agree! I took a 22-states-in-51-nights road trip out west with my kids this summer, and was surprised at the lack of air cooled VW's we saw. Being from SW FL, we thought we'd see lots of them on the road. Nope.
We went through CO, NE, SD, WY, MT, ID, WA, OR, CA, NV, AZ, NM. Seattle, Portland, south through Big Sur - maybe saw a couple. Not even the famous "dry Arizona desert bus" that I've read so much about. Very elusive.
We saw a few in a salvage yard outside Death Valley, and a couple in San Francisco, but they were all for taking tourists around town.
And yes - that wind! Whew!
On the plus side, we saw a lot of canned ham trailers. Maybe next time I'll bring a flatbed and tow a few home, lol. _________________ 1970 Tin Top Westy |

In the old days, Bus's would meet , unscheduled in the vast open plains (like Powder River), throw peace signs, stop and exchange food/stories, smoke a fatty and press forth to some destination that seemed worth driving towards. There was a certain "chill" between westy's and the rest of us poorer bus owners. 1980's Bus snobbery. _________________ Fat chick owner/operator |

I don't think I saw any buses on the road in Wyoming except for mine. Saw a couple of vanagons in Jackson though.
I spent about 3 weeks in August and September travelling through 13 states and 2 provinces. I saw more acvw's on the road in Idaho than all other states combined. In my 36 hours in Idaho I saw at least half a dozen buses and half a dozen beetles driving around.
Here's a couple pics from Wyoming. Beautiful place!
