Is this head shot or not? From my 63 camper. Is this called the valve guide boss? It was split in two places and I was able to pick out the pieces with my fingernail:
thanks,

It can be milled flat, counterbored and then a 'prosthetic' boss fitted. That's what my machinist suggested doing on some nice ported heads that had thin bosses that could've broken when he changed the guides... |
would it be cheaper to just buy another? found lots for sale in the classifieds. _________________ 1957 Oval Window

it's not a critical problem. It will still function fine so you don't NEED to fix it, but if you will be replacing the guides then you should fix it. |

I've seen these repaired a couple ways:
1) By welding up the broken boss,
2) Pull the guide, spotface it down, then turn/install a replacement section, or
the simplest way: just insert a stack of appropriately-sized flat washers. If it needs a new guide anyway, this last suggestion may be the simplest hack/fix.
But, that's an early-pattern head there w/ round rocker bosses & (possibly still) the troublesome long rocker studs (which were major headache material).
If long studs are still present, may have to add conversion studs to the bill - if ya can find some. Regardless, G'luck! _________________

I'm not sure how compression works.
Turbos don't produce torque, they produce HP. Instead of torque.
The real problem with NA engines is you don't hear the nice whine of the turbo as it spools up.
Before I commit, I'm going to do more research because I don't really know what piston rings are. |

If you replace the head, make sure it matches the other head... cc's, step, etc... |
