Simple dashboard from a fiberglass serving tray!
I was thinking about different options for building a dashboard for the Burro. I didn't want a metal one and would like to be able to get behind it for maintenance.
I considered an ammo can, but didn't have the correct size.
I cut at 4" x 14" section from the tray and it has a nice rolled edge. I am very happy
I mounted a small arm for the turn signals.

I need some ideas on running wires from front to rear in a protected tube. Would blue conduit work well? Any other ideas? _________________ If I knew what I was doing; I wouldn't be building a buggy! |

Seal tite condiuit or metallic seal tite if you want the uv protection. Or pvc conduit. _________________ My cut in half and rebuild thread

Why must everything be a new learning experience? I noticed the steering was a little tight, so I checked the box for oil. Well, it looked clear, but smelled like 90W.
Took off the cover and surprise: baby poop!
Cleaned out the box and refilled with 90 W and a dollop of moly grease. _________________ If I knew what I was doing; I wouldn't be building a buggy! |

That’s a nice steering box to have. Those late worm and sector 28mm shaft boxes (195? - 1961) were super beefy...save for the cover, like the other bug boxes. ZF made Porsche 356 iron covered boxes are now priced out of the market for the most part, so what you have there is the next best thing for off road. Worth saving for sure. Glad you checked it out and caught it before trouble happened. They can look surprisingly bad and really be fine though. I had one that was dry on the inside with nasty yellow scale over everything. Cleaned right up with a little (ok, a lot) of elbow grease. Glad you filled it with gear oil and not pack it with grease. Gear oil is the stuff for the worm and sector style boxes. _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

VanAppleBomb, Thanks for the information about the steering box. I am always amazed at the scope creep of any VW project. But then again, that is why I love the problem solving!
Went to install the clutch cable and Bowden tube - surprise it is 2 1/2 inches too short! The previous owner must have just cut the tubes and welded (globbed) it in place.
So searching through the piles of stuff, I found 3" of tube attached to an old Bowden tube. Welded on a tab and slipped in in place.
Works well, but not perfectly aligned (I am afraid when I have to replace it)
Next step is to shorten the cable using the loop method. Any suggestions before I tighten down the cable clamp?

CBeck, I considered that concept, but if I put a loop in the cable is it oriented correctly? Do I need multiple clamps?
Spent some time getting the fuse panel sorted out and always hated working under the dash in my buggy. I saw a fold down panel that I always thought was brilliant.
Panel in the up position - still able to access fuses and wires
Panel in the down setting.
Layout of the fuses and relays - more to be done
I am planning on relays for lights and horn. Any others needed? _________________ If I knew what I was doing; I wouldn't be building a buggy! |

Use one more clamp on the bellhousing side of existing clamp and rotate 180*. After 2nd clamp is on, the loop is doing nothing except waiting to get caught on something. The u bolt portion of clamp will distort cable and cause it to unravel near the clamp while the saddle clamps cleanly onto the cable next to it. The saddles should be against the loaded cables. If I remove the loop, I might consider using swage cable clamps. _________________ If I knew what I was doing; I wouldn't be building a buggy! |

We use nicos and proper crimper. Never used a double to splice cable, just to create loops at the end if required. But then again if whatever you do doesn't work out, it won't result in a heavy door falling _________________ My cut in half and rebuild thread

Layout of dash and fuse panel.
I think I might need one more switch for Hi/Lo beams
Relays for lights.

What lights need relays other than turn indicators or 4-way flashers? Just wire them all with 14ga wire direct to the switches.

I have a lot going on, the only relay is a 2 prong flasher relay.
It filled up fast

The 2 on the left-turn signals-use both for 4 way. Mini amber on each corner.
Horn + ign
Low/high beam with blue high indicator required by state
Off/on/on park/gage then headlites
Lite bar
Unused bu switch on trans now, what a concept
Led whip
Blu led strip dope lites
I'm a sic puppy, I like wiring. _________________ My cut in half and rebuild thread
