It's on page 55 of the owner's manual for a '70. You can get it here on TheSamba (technical section) if you don't have a physical copy.

From a fellow autostick owner welcome to the club. The ATF fluid is very easy to check, there should be a filler neck with a dipstick on the right side of the engine bay (last part of this page from the 1970 owner's manual):

Also if you weren't aware already, this website:

www.vwar.org

is dedicated solely to autostick owners, so if you have any other questions about the autostick feel free to register and post on there!

Check it like you would check the engine oil ... while cold or after car has sat for a bit.

I usually drive until engine is warmed up then shut it off and wait a few minutes before checking. There may some residual fluid in the return line that drains back into the ATF tank. That's just what I do- I really don't think it makes much of a difference.

Correct, fill at that same location. Any Dexron III ATF should be fine. I typically use the Castrol TransMax Import stuff.

Just be aware that to get the dip stick back in, you have to "hold your tongue just right". It is articulated and I haven't learned the trick yet to get it in the first try.

Carl (and Brainard), try this:
When you are trying to reinstall the dipstick, hold the twist cover cap with your left hand, and hold the top part of the metal stick with your right hand bent at that articulated angle from the cap, then jiggle it a bit as you try to push it inward down the neck. See if that works.

You know,

As many issues as my bug has, putting the autostick dipstick in and out has never been a problem.

Fining range one, rebuilding carb, fixing gas leaks, fixing dodgy electrical...

Cursing over previously botched floor pan repair job...

Mystifying replacement of heater boxes with j tubes...

Wondering what ever happened to the thermostat and couplings...

Yep, got plent enough others to keep myself concerned with...

Kyle
