I have a 1973 beetle with the stock 1600 engine which is disassembled. The crank and cam are both stock along with the 85.5mm pistons and cylinders. Are there any slightly larger slip in pistons/cylinders for this stock engine. The carb is the stock single solex unit which will be reused as well. Thanks

They make 87 and 88 cylinders that will fit in with no machining. The 88s are thin so I wouldn't sue them. The 87 only increase the displacement to 1641 so their not really wroth it.

Performance is a slippery slope. it gets expensive real fast.

You can't just change one thing.

Yes 87mm and even 88mm thin wall slip in cylinders are available. However some folks on here will tell you 87mm is the highest you can go for slip-ins, a few will say to not even use those. I have only ever used 85.5mm so I cannot give an opinion on quality/ reliabilty.

Same here - stock or go for a real bore increase (like 1776 or 1914). Just ponder this.....If power goes up proportionally to displacement increase, you may pick up may 1-1.5 HP with a slip in.....

Another option if you're possibly planning to replace the heads would be this thick wall 88mm P&C set that is stock diameter at the case end and requires machined heads -- http://vwparts.aircooled.net/Piston-Cylinder-Set-88mm-x-69mm-Slip-In-p/vw8800t1k.htm

You could always just keep the cylinders you have, and stroke the crank instead. A 74 or 76mm crank with 85.5 cylinders makes for a fun little stroker engine and a great way to get your feet wet in the shallow end of the engine building pool.

You need to find an Automotive Machine Shop in the greater Charlotte area that has experience with Air Cooled VWs.
You need this because your heads will need a valve job, and you can have the heads cut for 88 thick wall pistons & cylinders at the same time.
That way you can use the Machine in head, slip in case, 88 mm Thick wall Cylinders.
You'll also need to determine if your case needs machine work too.
If the main surfaces of the case are pounded, or beat up, or have ridges that catch your finger nail,
or if the case came apart because of too much end play, then you'll need machine work on your case too.

Here's some videos showing VW basic machine work

ADIDAS
What is the vehicle going to be used for. With that in mind build the engine for that purpose. Large or stock. Stock engines are forgiving.
