Hi all, will have a good friend that just purchased a 71 tin top through the Samba. It has a 1776 motor and now she is having some trouble with the transmission to where she is not comfortable to drive it back to So. Cal. She is in the San Jose area now and needs a reference for someone that can take a look at it. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Editing your thread title to something like "Transmission help in San Jose" might get you better response, right now "help please" is most likely some dumbass who's bus won't start and few will look.

A better description of the problem might help as well. Some tranny problems can be fixed in under an hour in a FLAPS parking lot.

Sorry for the vague description, I am getting this info from someone that is not to familiar with VW's. I asked what made her believe that it was a transmission problem, she said that it made a tick tick ticking noise. Took it to a garage and their diagnosis was she need a new transmission? I asked her if the ticking was when she was driving or stopped? She said it ticked all of the time, even when it was out of gear. Dose this sound like the valves need adjusting? Really just looking for a reputable person or place in the area that she can take it to?

Thanks

Try either Peninsula Automotive in Campbell 408 378 7033
or Bugformance San Jose 408 926 8830

Depending upon which side of town you are on...

Both of these are the biggest/best aircooled shops still left in the San Jose area.

Have her walk next to it while it rolls and listen. Just yesterday I found loose hubcaps causing that on a 1971.

Have her run the engine with the tranny in gear and the clutch pedal depressed. Is it making a noise at this time? Does the car need to be moving for it to make the noise?

If she can get to San Diego Asiab3 or I can help her. Transmissions usually don’t make noise when rolling in neutral. Like Steve said, the drive axles are suspect

Have her stick it in 4th and bring it down these parts. What Gary said, we have some skills down in these parts to get anyone up and going.
