I noticed today that the plastic in my '67 door strikers is mostly missing, and even though my doors close fine, I started looking around for a rebuild kit and couldn't find one from the usual suppliers.
Is anyone aware of a rebuild kit from a VW supplier?
It looks like ACVW suppliers only sell the entire replacement assembly, like this:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=2033176
Around $55 each seems to be the best price.
But, supposedly this is the same striker on late 60's to late 80's 911's, so I thought I'd see if I could find anything on that front. And I found this for $32.50 each:
http://www.sierramadrecollection.com/Door-Striker-Plate-Rebuild-Kit-911-912-67-89-p31177.html
Has anyone tried rebuilding one of these?
I found this forum post over on Pelican:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technic...eable.html
I'm going to attempt a rebuild, but I thought I'd post this here in case anyone else found this helpful. _________________ Currently own:

With today's 3D printing technology, you'd think someone would step up to the plate on these. I'm in the market too, can't seem to press the buy now button on them... So spendy for what it is. _________________ My 70 beetle was totaled Now to build the Ghia I always wanted. Rest in peace Ruby, I will miss you. Hello <insert Ghia name here>! |

Well, considering the identical fully assembled $55 VW strikers are over $200 each for a 911 with the Porsche tax added, I'm surprised the rebuild kits are actually so cheap.
I feel like for both sides, $65 and a little tinkering is better than $110 for a bolt on solution.
I mean that $45 saved will buy me, like, a shock or something right!? Gotta save dollars where you can! _________________ Currently own:

Please post your results... I hope it goes well. If so, I will follow suit. We should document this fully, DIY with pictures... Has "Sticky" potential. _________________ My 70 beetle was totaled Now to build the Ghia I always wanted. Rest in peace Ruby, I will miss you. Hello <insert Ghia name here>! |

I think I'm going to try one side, and if it works I'll do the other. I'd prefer to keep the original metal pieces. If you look at that thread on Pelican, there's a pic with both an original striker and a repro striker disassembled, and the metal assemblies are not made the same way.
I'll document what I do, and if it's successful I'll post the pics here. _________________ Currently own:

Alright, well I just placed the order for one. But before I did, I did some research because there's several Porsche vendors that I found to sell these kits, and I noticed some differences.
Here's the original disassembled (from the Pelican thread in my first post):
Here's the Sierra Madre kit (this is the one I ordered, and that I thought looked most like the original):
Here's the kit from Stoddard. Note that the upper plastic piece has a slightly different profile on the right side leading edge. And also the cutout on the lower piece is oval shaped rather than half D-shaped:
And then here's the kit from Pelican Parts, which appears to be from the same molds as the Stoddard kit:
Obviously these are just stock photos, so who knows what you might actually receive ordering from any of these companies. I'll post a pic of the Seirra Madre kit when it arrives. _________________ Currently own:

I'm in the same boat with the strikers for my '70 Karmann Ghia Coupe. I'll be watching with great interest for your report on the process and how hard or easy it is for a hobbyist to accomplish. Thanks for documenting this repair!

Still waiting for it to arrive. They had USPS first class for $3, so I did that. That way if it works and I decide to order one for the other side, my shipping total for both shipments will still be less than most places charge for one shipment. Did I mention I'm a cheap ass!
But it should be here any day now. Once I get it, I'll be documenting it all with pics and I'll post everything. _________________ Currently own:

On the rear you'll see two small dowel pins. Knock them out of the striker with a punch. You're going to have to hammer the hell out of them because they're in there REAL good and tight!

The first one's coming out! You can see I'm missing an entire piece of the plastic section.

Once you've got both of those metal dowel pins out, use a screwdriver and carefully pry apart the plates until you can swivel the top plate out of the way. This sounds way easier than it actually is, and be careful not to use too much force or you could bend the plates. That being said, it's not easy at all, and you will need to use some serious force. Just don't slam at it all at once.
See how the top plates rotates around the large pin. I don't know if that's another dowel, or how it's attached. I tried hammering it out too, but no luck. You're going to have to work around this fact, that the plates can not be completely separated.

Here you can compare the old piece that I had remaining in my striker with the new one from Sierra Madre. The profile of the old piece actually looks more like the Stoddard kit. Maybe for the other door I'll try their kit and see if the experience is any different.
Be advised that the big holes are about ~0.5mm too small, so you may need to take a dremel to the inside of the big hole and wear away a small amount of material to get it to fit onto the bushing. Don't go crazy with it, just a small amount.

And here it is! Ta-da! New plastic in the striker. Re-assembly should be EZ-PZ, right? WRONG! The reason is that the new plastic is bigger than the old shrunken pieces so getting the cup on the top plate of the striker back over them is impossible.

But fret not, there is a solution! Knock the metal bushings out, and grind away some of the side that presses into the rear plate of the striker. Leave just enough material so that it can grab the rear plate once it's in place. Do it to both bushings.

Now that you've ground away that bit of the bushings, set them in the striker upside down. Rotate the rear plate over them. Again, this sounds WAY easier than it actually is. The new plastic is thicker and you're probably going to have to use a hammer for some gentle persuasion. There will be alot of fiddling and swearing

Once you have the plates lined up, make sure the bushings are lined up with their respective holes, and then hammer the metal dowels back in from the front. There are splits on one side of the dowels to make one end fatter and stick in place. The side with the splits goes towards the front of the striker. Or better put, the side without the splits goes in first.
You may notice that the two plates are not perfectly parallel after you bent and separated them with the screwdriver. Don't worry about that. Once the dowels go solidly through both plates, they'll hold the entire sandwich together nice and tight!
You will need to hammer the mother lovin crap out of them to get them back in, btw. It'll be a nice release of frustration after everything you've gone through to get to this point!
