Hi, I am going to monstaliner my van and a gallon will cover ~ 60 sqft in 2 coats. So my question is - how many square feet of exterior are there on my tintop??
thanks

Sorry, but why not grab a tape measure and measure it?
I'd be VERY cautious about coverage estimates from a manufacturer, they always represent best-case scenarios, perfectly applied, in the perfect temperature, etc. -- and represent FLAT panels.
If it were me, I'd buy 150% of what is recommended. You'll need a *lot* more for contoured areas like exist everywhere on a Vanagon. _________________ ‘84 Westy, 2.1L with Digijet, 5.43 R+P, GT Gears

If measuring the van itself, I think you'd be close by multiplying 15' length x 5' width x 5' height = 375 square feet, less the windows and wheel wells.
(Edit: Ha, not quite what I meant!
See Kamz' actual formula below).
That might leave about 300 square feet but that's one rough estimate!
I know zip about this product... but if it's an off-the-shelf color, and locally available, I think I'd buy four and see how much is left after the first coat. I'd estimate the second coat will take approximately half as much paint as the first.
I used to be a sign painter so do have some history to back up my post. But these were painted mostly on MDO plywood so the first coat took a lot to absorb and cover.
Edit: and by the way, paint from the top down, IN THE SHADE, at maybe between 60 and 80 degrees. If you fear running out of paint, paint the rear hatch door last, and the nose from the forward door gaps forward second-last.
I'd personally start with a quarter-panel top, finish that panel, and move forward a panel at a time -- "panel" meaning a full area between door gaps. _________________ ‘84 Westy, 2.1L with Digijet, 5.43 R+P, GT Gears

There is a member on here, Glenn Morrisette, that Monstalined his van, first tintop then hightop. He will know how much is required. Username "tosimplify" if I had to guess.
He had a blog that documented that, "ToSimplify", but he has gone to Instagram so I am not sure if the blog is archived somewhere.

Length x width x height = Volume what you would want is ((2*15) + (2*5))*5=200sqf based on those estimates for lengths.

Let's break it down:
15' x 3.5' = 52.5 square feet for one side
5' x 3.5' = 17.5 square feet for one end
5' x 15' = 75 square feet for the roof
(52.5 x 2) + (17.5 x 2) + 75 = 215 square feet total
LxWxH = volume
LxH (or W) = surface area

Thanks Kamz, does that include pillars?
An aside of that is that's where a lot of paint per surface area will get used compared to the flats, in addition to gutters and all the little recesses, body moldings, fenders, etc.
So it seems safe that four to five gallons is about right for two coats and the extra paint needed compared to the factory-quoted coverage of "60 sq. ft. per gallon" as I mentioned above. _________________ ‘84 Westy, 2.1L with Digijet, 5.43 R+P, GT Gears

Has anyone used tintable Monstaliner recently, with a custom automotive paint toner? Their recommendation is to use PPG's Shopline product, but it appears PPG is phasing that out. |
