If you hate California so much why do some of you still live here?
Leave.
That means more room at the beach for us.

Chris did leave. And so did desertbusman. Kent is probably next. As for me, I will continue to dodge, weave and return fire.

Been here just a short while? Like sunshine pay better than real $$? I used to surf in OB in the 1960's before people discovered it, lived in Del Cerro and went to SDSU. It got really boring down there, and the lines for everything are awful now. Love the place but would not live there again - go to north county. I understand the city is washing the streets with bleach daily now because so many people have died of hepatitis. It is also unfortunate that the sewage overflows on winter rains into Mission Bay and washes out at OB. Used to get good quantity of abalones just south of there when there were lots still around. As soon as we retire we will sell and leave - it is unfortunate but this state is not what it once was. Wait until you see the increases in the cost of gasoline, water, and electricity coming your way. And, it is people who say silly ass things like "if you don't like it leave" from ignorance are assisting in ruining this place. That pushiness is everywhere here now. Sad.

That's never going to happen. I'm surprised So-Cal hasn't required the purchase of a daily wrist band to use the beach yet. Like every other attraction in So-Cal. Californians don't seem to like Oregon. Dismal beaches with needles and trash, zero surfing of any kind, Gang violence, rude people, rain 12 months a year, blizzards, tornadoes, earthquakes, crappy beer, greasy bland food, over priced cocktails, Horrible mass transit, 15% sales tax, the list goes on Shhh Better to just keep going north to Seattle, it's the Emerald City Very Happy
(People with ACVWs and California Homless seem to like it Cool

Add cold coffee and you gotta cut those toenails, man, you are killing me.

Hey -no one else can read this PM can they?

Speaking of cost increases... I just purchased a 2014 Toyota Yaris (Cue: "You meet the nicest people in a Honda...") and it was the base model with 65,000 miles on it. Price of $8,500 gave me a $701 Title Transfer fee. Yay! Evil or Very Mad

I asked her what the estimated renewal will be when it is due in March 2018, but she said she could not calculate, because DMV is raising the fees again in January.

FAWK! Mad

The estimates when the bill passed were double on the registration fee, and 14 cents a gallon on gas beginning in five (5) days. Add to that McDonalds has to pay $15 an hour plus employment taxes etc to hand you a bag of fries. Your water and electric bills will double nest year if the current bills in the Senate and Assembly pass.

Thanks for another beam of sunshine to help brighten my day, Steve. Can't wait to start (and keep paying) for the High Speed Pork Barrel, too.

But more expensive.

Real estate prices for Victorian mansions are great in Flint and Detroit. You could buy five of them for the price of a shoebox in California.

Problem is... it's Flint and Detroit...

You should try one of their steaks soaked in La Brea marinade, seasoned with natural sea salt, served on a high desert tortoise shell with a side of poppy dressing and giant sloth tail. The water served is 10,000 year old bottled Mojave deep pool from the Ice Age. I'll bet they don't serve that in Michigan.

If Chris escaped from this place I doubt he will want to be reminded of it. I believe he was treated quite poorly as he got close to retirement. He probably is sitting on a beach somewhere enjoying his new found freedom.

That's how I feel about the rest of the country.

Um,
You guys _have_ heard of the first law of classical economic theory, right?
It's called "Supply and demand"..

Good stuff costs more. Duh.

They haven't legislated it out of existence, and never will, despite their best efforts.

People cry about the "housing crisis" here in Santa Cruz all of the time.
Saying asinine things like "People have a right to affordable housing!!"..

Bullshit.

People do NOT have a right to live in a gorgeous beachfront town for a low price.

If you can't afford to live here, it's not the fault of the entire state of California.
Guess whose fault it is?

At least CA has some open space left.

I grew up in CO,
And now it's all mini-ranchettes to the horizon in all directions.
The suburbs, stretched out to several acres each lot, everywhere.

"Here is your designated Colorado Recreation Area - Please feel free to recreate as allowed during your specified time".

The only heroes in this story are the people who never had any kids.

I'm sure that Chris can't resist the fact that his house in San Jose is worth over a million dollars,
And he's cashing in, to go live somewhere that's not as nice, but cheaper.

I worked summers as an A/C tech in Phoenix for several years.
It has some nice things about it,
But,
That place sucks compared to here.

Chris,
You'll be reading this no doubt,
Just remember one thing..

Once you leave, you'll never be able to afford to come back.

Spend a summer in AZ before you commit.

Im retiring in place - thats right - people are nice, stuff is cheap, real estate will never kill you, people will do stuff for you for a decent living wage, not priced to the nearest Wells Fargo banker

Im 19 minutes from front door to a feeder airport with a ridiculous number of flights to NYC, from whence I can get anywhere in 12 hours.

We have a key to our house, somewhere, we just don't remember where we keep it.

You do have to learn to live between 30-90F, occasionally less, but we spend >80% of our time between 50-75 which is fine for me.

So true!

Sedona may as well be part of CA.
Isn't it in Marin County? Laughing

Why the middle class like Chris are cashing in and leaving California in mass. These are from this week's news:

Quote:
LOS ANGELES COUNTY, Calif. (AP) —
Health officials say more than 200 people in Los Angeles County have contracted West Nile virus this year and 17 have died.

Quote:
Death toll in California wildfires grows to 42
Totally preventable. Reports out today indicate that the fires which burned some 9000 homes were started by a tweaker who wanted to rob neighborhood homes, and apparently PGE wires that were not well maintained according to news articles.

Quote:
Death toll from San Diego hepatitis A outbreak rises to 19; more than 500 cases confirmed

Quote:
The nation’s most populous state may propose a plan to ban internal combustion engines, following France and the United Kingdom, Bloomberg reported Tuesday. California Air Resources board chair Mary Nichols told the publication Gov. Jerry Brown, “has expressed an interest in barring the sale of vehicles powered by internal-combustion engines,” in that state.

Earlier news:

Quote:
State power regulators decided today how to divvy up the biggest electric rate hike in California history, boosting rates by as much as 80 percent for residential customers who use the most power.

Quote:
Nearly a quarter million San Jose families and businesses will soon be asked to shell out extra for water.

With the blessing of the California Public Utilities Commission, the San Jose Water Company will raise water rates for 229,000 customers, even though they may have conserved water during the state’s historic drought.

Quote:
Source: California Public Utilities Commission OKs Increasing Water Rates for 229,000 San Jose Customers - NBC Bay Area http://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/California-Pu...Customers-

Quote:
OAKLAND — East Bay water customers would see rates rise 19 percent over the next two years under a proposal announced Tuesday.

Quote:
Under Senate Bill No. 1, the gasoline tax will increase by 12 cents, from 18 cents to 30 cents per gallon, the Los Angeles Times reported after Gov. Jerry Brown signed the legislation in April.

Nov 1:
Quote:
The excise tax on diesel fuel will rise 20 cents, to 36 cents per gallon; the sales tax will also go up by 4 percent, to 9.75 percent, according to the Times.

As part of the legislation, motorists will also have to pay an annual vehicle fee, though that doesn't take effect until Jan. 1, 2018. The fees range from $25 for cars worth less than $5,000 to $175 for those valued at more than $60,000.

Additionally, a $100 annual fee on electric vehicles will be imposed on owners in lieu of gas taxes beginning on July 1, 2020.

California's budget is approximately 270 billion dollars - the single payer system the democratic party are passing here will increase that to about 670 billion dollars. Guess who will pay for it - the middle class who works -

Quote:
Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom (the guy who got caught doing his aide's and best friend's wife) has made his most explicit endorsement yet of a controversial single-payer healthcare proposal that has roiled Democratic politics in California.

It just goes on and on and on. That is why people who retire are mostly leaving. They know what is coming. Those who work for a living will be asked to pay the bills of those who choose not to work.

Ah Steve. You are on my ignore list. A friend just sent me a note saying "...hey check out SGK's response to you. He trashed you with lies, as usual..."

So I'll return fire.

Have I been here "a short while"? Just been here in California 56 years. How about you?
I have plenty of real dollars. Sunshine is nice - it powers my solar panels.
I still Boogey Board in OB. And I went to SDSU also. Aztec for life -- are you?
You find San Diego boring but you love Citrus Heights? That is a stretch.
Yes we have a real homeless and Hep-A crisis. Fostered by our do-nothing Republican mayor. Bless his little red hat.
Sewage spills were a major problem before huge amounts of money were put into upgrades.
So when you retire you will "sell out and leave". Good. This implies that you lived your life and made your wealth.......where? Would that be California?
Seriously, If you can find a good place to live in a lower cost place go for it. Your dollars might go a lot farther in Missouri, Idaho or yes, even Michigan. I'll stay. It is far from perfect. But it is home. The weather is good.
