Do any of you know if the VS exhaust flows any better than stock or an empi exhaust for a type 4?

As long as the T-4 is stock, the OE mufflers deliver the best performance in my experience. I gave up on Mexican/Brazilian pea shooters years ago since i don't have 1/2 a day to rebuild them. I've been lucky in buying parts stashes with German mufflers that fit and preform correctly. I vaguely remember a Mexican muffler reducing the acceleration on a Bus years back..

Laughing Assholes. Very Happy

The word is that I thought about it a lot, put my head together with the owners, and constructed an exhaust that deviates from the Harrymech Plan just a lil bit.

I'll test it out tomorrow. You clowns will just need to wait till I am damn good and ready. Wink

Well, all the ninnies are out buying into the corporate Black Friday shit here today- it's been like rush hour all damn day. Rolling Eyes I was able to hit a max of 50-55 anywhere before having to brake, so road testing was a waste other than to say if it improves top speed as much as the "pull" at lower speeds has shaped up we just might have a winner...

Stay tuned.

So.

Good road test today. Hit 65 with about 2/3 pedal in the required 30 plus seconds. Held speed effortlessly and only dropped a MPH or two going up about a 1/4 mile incline/ hill.

On the return trip hit about 68 till I got whacked by a cross wind- another PNW winter storm rolling in. Rings only have about 80 miles on them. Not sure on the rest of the engine but I almost want to say the damn thing had never been fired by how pristine it was inside.

The Bus is happy. I am happy.

So here's what I wound up doing. I put 4 slices in the original tail pipe bunghole, removed it, and expanded the hole to the size of the one piece LATE Type 3 tail pipe. If I had to guess I'd say 21 to 32 mm.

I had a muffler guy make me a 45 degree matching pipe for the 45 degree type 3 tailpipe entry tip.

I lined everything up. My first choice was to braze everything with a propane torch but that didn't work out, so I wound up having to use my stupid "Handy Andy" toy- like HF wire welder.

Please note I don't claim to be a welder. I am a way better grinder.

I tacked the inner and outer bunghole skins in the muff together then tacked the elbow to the tail pipe. Then I tacked the elbow into the bunghole. I tacked the assembly to the original TP bracket on the muffler, then made and welded on a bracket to bolt to the original Bus tail pipe tab.

Then I welded solid welds over my tack welds. I had to do this several times because I kept having annoying little leaks. After I got all the leaks sealed I was too much of a pussy to attempt grinding the welds possibly creating more leaks, so we'll call this thing a "primitive". Actually, D/A/N called them "Neanderthal welds", and my Neanderthal friends tell me that all Neanderthals want to kill his ass for that.

Anyways, this gave me probably twice the "breathe- ability" at least, with no extra noise. I did need to tilt the TP end down just slightly to make sure I cleared the bumper.

I also have to say that I'm super impressed with the VHT high temp ceramic paint. It just shrugged off direct contact with the torch and the welder. It got black in spots but the carbon just wiped right off.

Sounds promising! So is that a single tail pipe?, or duals like Gary has?

Single, but quite a bit larger. Backpressure is sort of crucial, and both Gary and Harry are running larger twin port engines, where this is a 1600 SP. I was just concerned that we'd lose too much backpressure going with the dual design. This was Plan A, and if it didn't work Plan B was an Ernst bug muffler with twins.

Second reason is there's way too much damn money in this Bus already. The muffler on it was already new, I paid $10 for the tail pipe at a VW show years ago, we used a couple bucks worth of welding wire and had about $6 in the elbow. The most money I had in this conversion blew off on the test drive. Laughing

I don’t see the Eberspacher exhaust pipe in any of the pics. Does it interfere with the new tailpipe?

Wow. Good to see its breathing! I don't think that weld job was bad at all. I've seen that technique used when I studied at several places abroad.

Primarily at the underestimated and dying art of the muffler shop. Many a prestigious welder has emerged from these fine institutions. Some able to capture the double mastery of welding and tire fitting. Wink Ive even seen some dive into the mysteries of the Barbacoa side shop Shocked Hold your head up high pendejo! This Buds for you! Laughing

Oh - and no the Eberspacher pipe should not interfere.

...............and just for the record, I don't want to kill D/A/N for calling it a "Neanderthal weld" Cool Now go take a break with a cigar and a shot of something.

Bish, please. Rolling Eyes I threw that shit away.

I'll give you three guesses and the first two don't count. Laughing

(HINT: You don't see the Eb TP because it wasn't the focus of attention, and of course it's off with the pics of the bumper and leaf catchers off cos that's how it mounts...)

You know me better than that...
