Some success to report:
SHIFTING: After bending the guide pin bracket, shifting is smoother than ever. We have reverse lockout! All gears are easy to find. We’re not going to mess anything else because...why tempt fate?!?
ENGINE: installed stock distributor and it runs as great as ever and the idle returns to normal much quicker than with the modified type 3 distributor that was in there.
Also managed to squeeze engine seal in place with a little silicone spray, a plastic putty knife, and hand warmers to keep my fingers from going numb.
All in all we’re feeling confident that we’ll be able to drive this thing to the mountains to hike while we enjoy our “mid-winter break” from work! Well...as soon as we troubleshoot the BN4 heater, but that’s on another thread... |
Keep an eye on the oil level as the rings are still wearing in. Have fun! _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Took this guy on an overnight trip to a remote trailhead:
and learned some stuff while sitting and driving in hours upon hours of steady rain. The leaks through the sliding windows are worse than I thought. Water pours in and fills the bottom channel. Had to keep a towel there to catch as much water as possible, and wring it out regularly. I'm about to order some new seals from West Coast Metric (unless someone has a better idea).
Also, the driver's side wiper arm was hitting the bottom seal when the wipers were on the highest setting. So today (in spring-like conditions), I decided to adjust them per Bentley. However, as soon as I looked at them compared to the book, I realized we *must* have the wrong arms!! Here's a photo of ours:
I compared our pic to "live" pictures of other busses and confirmed that we need to swap them out. If anyone reading this has a set laying around PM me b/c they are a pain to come by! |

So it's the fuzzy channels that are the issue? Let me know on that and if they are give me an approximate width, if possible. I have lots of that stuff around for both VW and M-B.
And about the wiper arms... What can I say? Those are what came on it and I had no reason to doubt. Try DLWestWiperguy on here- maybe he can help you out. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Nope. It has nothing to do with fuzz. The channel where fuzz should be is just a collection point. Water is pouring in from outside. It gathers in the space between the body and the rubber seal (which is quite hard and compressed compared to the new seals in other windows) and then collects in the channel that accepts the sliding window...I suppose I'd describe it as the "female" side of the window. When the channel gets full (doesn't take long in steady rain), the water runs out into the bus, collects on the floor next to the accessory battery under the jump seat, and also runs amok as much as it can on the floor, so I now keep a towel jammed under the table to prevent it from ruining much besides the trim on the floor under the table.
After much poking and prodding and watching water rivulets, I have concluded that the only solution is new sliding window seals. A quick email and photo of our windows sent to West Coast Metric pointed me towards the right ones. |

The one on the sliding door doesn't leak? _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

It does, but just less than the driver's side. I'm able to contain the water there with one shop towel, instead of 2 shop towels and a dishtowel. The wooden dowel I have jammed in to keep the window from moving (sliding door window has the busted latch) is perma-soaked. |

Ah, got it.
Yes, those seals are harder than the other ones because they are super thick. They were plenty flexible when they came out, though, and Zack told me they were NLA everyplace, so I cleaned up and reused the old ones.
All the other seals came from WCM so I wonder why they told him they couldn't supply the Riviera window ones.
Too bad there don't seem to be any better windows available.
I almost think you'd be further ahead with the Westfalia "Andersen" style windows as I never recall having leak issues with those.
*EDIT*- Maybe I'm misunderstanding here. I am talking about the rubber seals between the body and the window assemblies, and I think maybe you are talking about the thin grey seals at the glass. Or maybe not. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

If the WCM seals fail to solve the problem, get ahold of Motion Windows in Vancouver, WA -- the descendant of Peninsula Glass who made the original Riviera windows. They may have a solution.
Worst case would be new or different sliding windows. I've got a pair of OE VW sliders from a '78 and they went in leak-free with the standard window seal, I know a couple of people have had new ones made by Motion Windows, and I think CIP1 or JustKampers have new sliders available too. Only problem is that the new ones don't look as vintage as the OEVW or Riviera windows... |

Thanks for all of this!!
We went at the sliding windows with a spray bottle today and they leak all over the place. The large black seals in the body leak at all four corners on both sides so it looks like new WCM seals will fix some of the problem.
The windows themselves leak in a multiple places, not least between the two panes where the seal is more or less shot. Putty tape fixed some of that though the windows can't be opened with it in place. That won't be a problem for the rest of winter, but come summer, we'll suffer! Next, we'll put some flowable silicone around the larger seals and see if that can keep the water out until we can either rebuild the windows or get "new" ones. |

The putty tape remains pliable. Even if it hardens and sticks a razor blade will remove it handily. Flowable silicone is exactly the answer for the big black seals. When you get the WCM seals, if you could photo them and post them here or email me photos I'd like to see if these are exactly the same as what's in there or not BEFORE you tear it apart. Last thing we need is a Brooklyn "Aw, Shit", the cousin of the Bronx cheer.
Meanwhile, I'll check around out here for alternatives. I think the Westy jalousies are probably going to be a better bet, esp since it seems all parts to reseal them, overhaul them, and keep them from rattling are still readily available. They will give you better air flow since they open for the whole length, the screens fit inside, and the way they are designed it's virtually impossible for them to leak- no built in riverbeds... I mean channels. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Well how about this for a Brooklyn "Aw shit"?
We've been hearing an intermittent clunking sound going over bumps since getting the bus. We attributed it to all the random camping shit we have floating around in the cabinets. Well, today I was sitting in the back while we let our friend drive the bus and I'll be damned if the clunk wasn't coming from beneath my feet....the passenger side rear wheel!!!
Stay tuned for more fun....... |

I had that on the driver's side on the drive from the alignment place after installing the engine. A shock bolt had backed out a little. Why? Because it can, I guess.
Probably time to check CV fasteners and lug bolts like I told you you would need to anyways. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.
