This might be a dumb question but here it goes...does anybody knows if the back panels take the rubber boot like the ones in the door panels? I removed back panels but no signs of rubber boot. |

I have never seen the boots on the back panels. I have only seen it on the doors. It is to keep the water vapor from entering the passenger compartment. The water gets in around the window scrapers. There is suppose to be a plastic vapor barrier adhered to the door before those boots get pushed in. I will always cut a 8 mil piece of plastic the shape of the inside door panel rib. Then I squeeze on a 1/4 inch wide bead of GE Silicon II, circling each clip hole and running the silicon between the holes. Like connecting the dots. Then I apply the plastic barrier and then push an awl into one of the door panel clip holes. I then push a rubber boot into that one hole. I do this at the four corners to secure the plastic and then I punch all of the remaining holes and push in a rubber boot. _________________ Jimbo

On my 1969 standard beetle, there are rubber boots on the rear seat side cards. That being said, mine has pop outs, but if memory serves me, my 68 had them too, without pop outs.
a trick I learned years and years ago is to lube up the rubber boots with silicone plumbers grease. A little tub of that stuff lasts a long time. I just dip a Q tip into the tub, then swirl it around inside the rubber boot. sure makes taking off the door cards easy. |
