I'm about ready to mount my '55 body back to the restored chassis with transmission and wondered, would it be easier to have the engine bolted in place considering it is a 2007cc based engine? Or would it be easier to squeeze it in after? _________________ '63 Ragtop |

I've always thought it would be easier, saves moving the engine back and forth trying to clear aprons and alt pulleys and belts. Seen a lot of videos of people doing it no problems with stock 1200-1600cc motors so can't imagine it'd be any different or worse than doing with body already mounted. _________________ 55 build: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=680057 |

I can tell you from experience, that putting a 78mm stroker crank engine (which, with 2007cc, you have) into an uncut Oval engine bay, is a PITA. I have to install the short block, then the heater boxes and exhaust, fan shroud and alternator/generator, and dual carbs on after the long block is in, and even at that, it's a tight fit. There is NO WAY you can install the engine with the dual carbs and manifolds in place, either from the top, or the bottom. I've done it in a type 2 (1961 Single Cab) because the rear apron is removable. _________________ 2003 Samba Chummie Winner- Best Story

I've dealt with ovals and small engine bays for some time. This engine came out of this car, I was just thinking of maybe trying something different. _________________ '63 Ragtop |

I bet VW installed the engine first and body later. I would guess that is because it is easier in that order if the body is already off. _________________

In an effort to make it easier, I've trimmed down the cylinder tins about 1/2" along the seal edge to gain a little working room. _________________ '63 Ragtop |
