Quite happy with my 1940s rotary phone. Always works, no batteries to replace and crystal clear reception. It only costs $10 a month for a land line. Most smartphone plans here are $50-80 a month.
I kind of get the comparison to not getting on board with computers in the 90s but to me it's closer to not getting a TV.
The home computer was a truly revolutionary productivity tool that changed the way the whole word works. Smartphones seem more like toys that numb the mind and dull the senses of many users. Most people appear to use them for social media, texting and little else.
Instead of using apps I try and use my brain. I drive all over the city for work and most of my co-workers use maps on their phones to navigate. I use my memory. My girlfriend tries to use a notes app for grocery lists and such, but gets frustrated when it doesn't work properly. I use my memory or a pen and paper if it's complicated.
I do have an iPod Touch. When I'm traveling on my own I use Face Time to call home and use the internet when I can get wi-fi, which is just about everywhere. Initially I installed a bunch of apps but I got bored of them and the only ones I use now are Remote to control my iTunes via Airport, and RV Info which keeps track of all the maintenance on my van.
Otherwise the iPod just sits on the arm of my couch so I can check my email when I'm too lazy to go to my computer. The screen is all smashed and the battery is dying but I can't justify $50 to fix it.
So...no iPhone X for me I guess.

When health insurance costs $1269 for 3-4 years, sure.

| I'm quite happy with my Note8 replacement. Samsung ran a promotion for previous exploding 7 owners (mine never exploded) for 50% cost.. so I got my 8 for half price. And it has everything (and probably more) than the new iPhone. And came out before the iX with all the same features (and maybe more)... |

Could not have said it better. I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 but hardly ever use it for anything other than phone calls, texting, taking photos, and the occasional internet search. I've gotten along just fine for decades without navigation in my car (or stupid lane departure or backup camera or any of those other warning systems that also dull the senses.)
There are a few apps that I do tend to find useful- some store apps and GasBuddy for example. But by in large I prefer to figure things out on my own.

And just how long do you have to wait to get a major surgery done? I know a couple of people relying on that system that have been waiting for 2-3 years for hip & knee replacements.

How about when the lady who was texting and driving and plowed into my dad's parked truck pushing into my parked Westy got her towing bill, lost her car (totalled) and then pays 7 years of insurance premiums and/or possibly is un-insurable and therefore is on the public transit path for the rest of time?
Not to mention She probably got some neck/back pain out of the deal?
At least you can text to your heart's delight on the fuckin bus

That sucks... but he was texting. I feel a bit bad, but if your texting and total your car I can't give you my full "I'm so sorry for you" thing. I do hope he is okay though.

The only way I can picture that happening is by rear ending a pillow delivery truck and being ejected out the front into a big fluffy pile.
I've seen it happen in cartoons.

Shoot they said same thing about radio in the 1930s, I love technology and I’m not real old but even I’ve seen a lot of change. The smart phone is just another tool in my tool box. I especially like being in a strange city and using google to find things while I concentrate on driving, especially helpful in heavily congested areas. My 90 year old father is missing a lot because he will not learn smart phones, all his grandchildren and great grandchildren operate this technology as second nature. He does have an IPad and can do face time.hooray.  |

I'm an admitted android fanboy and I never could understand why people liked the iphones with the smaller screens and restricted operating systems. I do understand the "it just works" way of thinking, I just like to screw around with my technology.
I have the Google Pixel and I'll stick with it for now. Just like the X, the Pixel 2 seems overpriced for the new bells & whistles.
