This is mounted in my spare tire well. It has two wires coming out of it; one with an in-line fuse. Both wires lead under the dash. One is dangling up behind the ignition and the other is hanging in the middle of the dash behind the radio location.

Obviously not a factory or dealer installation based on the the installation hardware.

What the hell is it?

You're correct. It allows for a 12V accessory, like a modern radio, to be used with the stock 6V system.

I had the same box in my 60 coupe. It was an inverter. don't
know what for.

It's to run a 12 Volt accessory in a 6 Volt car.
