Spent the last couple days replacing the main oil seal and the trans shaft seal in my '64 coupe. While in there, we also replaced the clutch plate, disc, and throw out bearing. The good news is it appears the leaking has stopped. The bad news is the low pitched screeching sound the clutch makes when starting off in first or reverse is still there. I had thought the sound was clutch chatter caused by an oil soaked clutch disc, and assumed the noise would be gone once the seals and disc were replaced. The rebuilt trans has less than 5,000 miles on it, and has no shifting issues. When I recently drained the gear lube, there was no evidence of any metal particles on either of the magnetic plugs.
So, I'm wondering what could be causing this strange screeching sound? _________________ “Tinker Toy” 1967 Savannah Beige Beetle Sedan...........Mostly Original Survivor

Does the sound go away when the clutch is engaged ? Try starting out in 2nd gear first to see if makes the noise. Unfortunately it does seem like an issue with the T/A. |

Yes, it screeches only when starting to move from dead stop. Once moving, the sound goes away. I will try starting off in 2nd gear and report back. _________________ “Tinker Toy” 1967 Savannah Beige Beetle Sedan...........Mostly Original Survivor

Test drove this morning, and the screeching sounds happens when moving from a dead stop in 1st, 2nd, and reverse. Seemed to be a little less noticeable once everything was up to operating temp, and Its more audible inside the car than outside. _________________ “Tinker Toy” 1967 Savannah Beige Beetle Sedan...........Mostly Original Survivor

After covering a little over 100 miles of around town stop and go driving since installing the new clutch, I'm happy and relieved to report that the noise has almost completely disappeared
I've heard and read that a new clutch needs a few hundred miles of stop and go miles to properly seat to the flywheel, and in my case it appears to be true. _________________ “Tinker Toy” 1967 Savannah Beige Beetle Sedan...........Mostly Original Survivor

Was the pressure plate new? Some have packing clips that are supposed to be removed before installation. If a wire clip got left in there it can make all kinds of noise. |

Here is a thread where someone left the clips in by mistake and it's talked about some. I'm not saying this is your issue, but just throwing out ideas of what it might be.
