I thought I would start a build thread for this car to keep a documented history of progression. I have been casually looking for a real Manx ever since doing the interior on GeoffP beautiful Lime green car in 2010. This car was found earlier this year by mcdoc2000. Matt found this car along with a Thunderbug buggy. I hounded Matt to be able to purchase the car for a bit and he finally decided to sell the car to me and build the Thunderbug for himself. There was something about this car that really caught my eye and after driving down to Sacramento this past labour day weekend I am very happy to have it.
As found aside from the rear 15x10 wheels which I found on the way home from Sacramento
A quick wash and rattle can on the wheels to see what they'd look like white.
It looks to be a very well built car with quite a few original Manx and period options. Some of these include:
-Dietz 820's
-side pods
-Stewart Warner gauges
-front bumper
-Select-A-Drop front end
-original 1968 Koni's on all four corners
-hard top
-side curtains
-Foyega front seats
-rear seat
-Manx Steering Wheel
-camber compensator
-copper Hurst shifter
-Tri-Phase air cleaner
-DelSwift mirror
and more that I'm probably missing
The inside of the original Hardtop was even carpeted
It has a ton of original pin striping on it. Some is faded off only leaving a raised impression where it was and some is still visible. I am able to pick up what it looked like with paper and a pencil.
The original gelcoat is in good shape so I only plan to polish it up, i've done a few quick test spots and I think it will come out nice
My plans are for a full preservation after I round up a few key original parts that I would like to find first. If anybody has a stash of early Meyers Manx and/or period buggy parts that they'd be willing to sell some of please contact me. |

What a time machine! I'll bet a good pinstriper could reproduce all that awesome art if you wanted too. The pinstriping says this was a street car, but the off-road air cleaner says otherwise. Perhaps a progression of owners changed how it was used? In any event it looks like it was a high end build in it's day, and having the hard top and curtain set is a huge plus. |

My plan is to reproduce the striping, by tracing it you can even tell what stripes were layed down first by how they overlap. It definitely needs to be built era correct, no LED lights and Beard seats here. |

I see three items on your car listed on this page from the Meyers Manx parts catalog, the back seat, the steering wheel and the adapter kit

Hi Rich, I'm so glad you hounded me the way you did, I think this buggy found just the right person to bring it back to life. I'm looking forward to following your build.

Congrats! I love the burnt orange gelcoat color. I'm sure you'll use a bias ply tire as they're the only type of tire that will do a vintage buggy resto justice, but what do you think you'll choose? An aggressive off-road tread or a swanky/creep-swinger porno style on-road muscle car style tread? Either one would be totally awesome in my opinion. That's always been a tough decision for myself and my '69 Manx... either way I'm totally looking forward to this thread..it's about time something cool is happening in this forum. It's been stagnant for a year or two. We all get preoccupied (including myself) to keep things interesting. Can you please post some as purchased photos in the Vintage Nostalgic and contemporary dune buggy thread I started a few years ago?? You'll have to do a quick search to find it as it's always getting buried. It's nice to keep a running thread of original and or period correct dune buggies for reference and inspiration. Thanks!! |

Thanks Matt. So excited to build this car. For now it's all about hunting for the few period parts that it needs.

Thanks, funny you mention the tires, I've spent way to much time looking at different options. Bias plies are a must! With all the striping and such on this car I feel that something interesting is in order. I've been collecting pictures of period buggies so I have a few ideas I'm toying with and of course I'll add pics to your thread. |

HI Matt,
Nothing really to speak of aside from collecting some more parts for the engine etc. I am still on the hot for a set of wheels for the car. I would love to find a full set of vintage chrome widened wide 5 wheels like the ones here in my wanted add: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=2117903
or at least a pair of 15x8 wheels that I can have chrome plated but i'm particular to an outter hoop that look like these:
Any leads would be great if anybody else is reading this!! |

I Hear you. You would think those widened wheels are a dime a dozen, but they’re not. They’re easily made brand new and powder coated in whatever color you want. And although they seem kind of pricey compared to an aftermarket wheel, they are custom built at this point and a fair amount of labor goes into making them which is why they cost what they cost. I’m sure you’re already aware but there are a few advertisers doing a quality job widening stock wheels any size you want Kind of sucks but if you just spend the money you got exactly what you want and they’re just done. Do you have any new shots of the original jell coat cleaned up yet? Or are you keeping us in suspense. Ha ha! |

I'm not afraid to spend the money but I need the correct outer hoop. I'm only after 15x8 hoop pictured. It needs to have the "bell" shape. Chroming isn't cheap so I might as well make the wheel I want before sending it in for plating. |

Here is a few better pictures of the wheel i'm after. Note the outer bell shaped rim. Either in 15x8 or 15x8.5

It’s just a stock widened factory 15” beetle rim with a deep offset. |

15x8” with the deep offset are 345/pair, and 6” are less... just go to wheels/ tires in the classified parts section. It’s one of the first ones that pop up. You can use the search box in the classified section and punch in widened smoothie and it’ll likely come up. |

Hey Roscoe. It's totally different looking wheel hoop. That's like calling all fibreglass buggies, Manx's. 😄 |
