Greetings,
I just took custody of a German-spec 1988 VW "wasserboxer" Pritsche. For the uninformed, it's basically a 2 door Doka pickup truck. Mileage is 111,000 kilometers. It's in very good shape with only a little surface rust. History is that it was used as a forestry vehicle, then retired and sold to several private parties. Extensive maintenance records were kept, which is typical for Germany. I drove it from Berlin to Stuttgart (almost 700k) with no problems, no oil use or leaks and no water leaks. The underside looks "dry as a bone" - ironically, as the Germans say! I honestly can't believe how well it starts up and how smooth it runs. Right now, the only issue is a rusted elbow exhaust pipe leading to the catalytic converter that leaks and needs to be replaced. With that said, I have a few questions. Pardon me if they've been answered before:
- Does anyone know of any German suppliers that I can buy parts from at reasonable prices? I can order from the U.S., but they seem expensive ($80 for the elbow pipe)!
- What are some things that I should be prepared for in the future for maintenance? I plan on driving keeping the vehicle for the long haul & want to get ahead of any problems. Offhand, I'll replace all of the fluids, it seems like it may need new shocks, but can't think of anything else.
Thanks in advance for any responses! Greg |

I think a Pritsche is a single cab or Sinka, and the OP indicated that it only has two doors.

Thanks for all the replies. Yes, Doka is a 4-door, Pritsche is a 2-door. Dokas seem more prevalent here but I wanted the larger bed of the Pritsche. It's really huge. Most of these trucks are in pretty bad condition. They were typically (ab)used by construction workers or people in the "trade," so it was hard to find one in decent shape with relatively low mileage. I'll post pics soon.

Greetings,
Finally got around to posting a few pics of my Pritsche. Most of the photos are from the memorable Berlin to Stuttgart road trip. Just had to stop in front of the Brandenburg Gate to stop traffic and for a photo op! I've since put it away for the winter, but just started it up a few days ago in the garage. Ironically, I noticed a fuel line leak and a small coolant leak, something that wasn't present during the 8+ hour drive. Got some work to do over the winter....

Those make awesome work trucks, and that's a really nice example. _________________ Casey--
