This is pretty cool stuff! Looking good!
I use DPR for my machining, now. For over 30 years I always used Brothers. My last interaction with them was not good. Plus they are a solid hour drive away. So, I went searching for another VW machine shop. DPR came highly recommended by my old friend employer. Great place! They are closer to me, right at 20 minutes away, so that was an added bonus! _________________ Jimbo

Although I've never had my hands on a 36 hp case, your build and modifications are very interesting. Have you placed the 26 mm oil pump into the right case half to see how well the case's oil passage outlet hole lines up with the pump's inlet hole? I can imagine there is a bit of a diameter difference in that the case's hole is smaller than the pump's. You can make a small scribe by straightening out one leg of a paper clip and clipping the end with diagonal cutters so that you have a sharp tip, then run the leg through the pump's inlet hole so that the tip marks the case. If this marking shows that the case hole can be opened a bit, you can use a cone-shaped grinding stone for a hand drill to open up the case's hole to match the scribe marks. "Match porting".

The pump is for a small oil passage case. It is only slightly larger then the case oil passage. _________________ 71 ghia coupe: Build thread http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=511738&highlight=

Nice work with the intake port area welding and the porting itself. Cutting guide bosses for dual springs is usually only needed on "1600-based" heads with cams like Engle 120 with near 0.400" or more cam lift. Is there such an aggressive cam made for 36 hp engines?
I did not read back in your thread... will you be using dual-throat carbs on this engine? |

Thanks for clarifying about the springs/bosses. I found a photo in the classifieds of an NOS 36 hp head which has the valve spring seat area (and the "bare" guide) exposed; now I see how you modified your head. |

Brored the case for the 83mm cylinders then I sandblasted it and went over it with a wire brush. I found a set of original vw pop out 1/4 windows awhile back and I just started to rebuild them. I used oven cleaner to remove the anodizeing. Next I sanded out any deep scratches or pitting. Then I used a buffing wheel to polish. I think I will be clear coating them to protect the finish.

Can you explain your process to sand and polish out the scratches in the glass? Products used? I have some original glass that needs some attention like this. Thanks! |

I believe he was talking about sanding out the scratches and pitting on the aluminum trim around the glass, not the actual glass itself |

That is correct. I did not polish the glass I was talking about the aluminum frames. I know I’ve seen people post about polishing glass before. Try the search function. I’m sure you will find what you are looking for. _________________ 71 ghia coupe: Build thread http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=511738&highlight=

Time for me to ask a stupid question...
Why turn the cylinders 90 degrees before machining them to fit on a 36 horse engine. Another question, do you have to turn down the tail of the cylinder where it fits into the block? I understand that the 36 horse engine has smaller head stud spacing. _________________

Do you mean the head stud pattern isn't 2 sets of 4 studs in a square pattern? _________________
