Hy guys
We are currently traveling in our 84 westy and having a big problem with sudden loss of power. It's getting to much fuel and doesn't really shifts down anymore. We think it might be the mass air flow sensor which is being glitchy and does not mix the fuel/air right. Getting one is pretty hard and as we are just rushing through, time is a issue.
Does somebody living in the calgary area has a spare one or knows where to get one?
already a big thanks for any kind a help |

Could be several things (incl the AFM) but that description really makes me think of the common problem of the coax on the green O2 wire shorting to the center conductor.
If even one strand of the coax comes in contact with the (female) connector the ECU will misread the O2 signal and run very rich - resulting in loss of power and mileage in the single digits.
It only takes a moment to check with an ohmmeter and is simple to fix (or eliminate as the problem).
Several threads out there describing the problem and showing pics of same. |

If you decide to get an expert to handle your problem. Paul at Tony's Auto Service is the best vanagon mechanic in the city, in my opinion. 403-266-3397
He has been fixing my vanagons since 1993. Usually can get you in pretty quick. |

thank you guys for the fast response.
We tested a couple things, everything seemed to work solid. Disconnected the o2 sensor and then suddenly the black smoke coming out of the exhaust stopped. Now trying to drive a bit around without the sensor and look how it works.
we hope it's just that and we are lucky |

Sounds like you are on to something.
One other clue that may point to that coax shorting (or other O2 issues) is that the van will start and run okay for a minute or so, then the crappy running begins anew.
The ECU ignores the O2 sensor immediately after start-up, waiting for it to have a chance to warm up. |

SuissVW,
Where are you headed next? Perhaps if you let people here know, someone in your destination can help. There are a lot of Vanagon people here who volunteer their time to help travelers.
