Have been asked if I could do a Repro (same style as the Type 3 dash ) for the Karmann Ghia

Think the circa 1967 dash would be the more popular but not sure.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

What differences where there over the years ????

Your input please .

Should we get a interest number of about 20, we will be able to get them made at approx. same cost as the type 3 dash

Less than that would make them too expensive to produce.

Please give extensive feed back so we can decide to make or not.

Herman

This is for the 67 and earlier dash pad, correct?
How much did the Type 3 dash pad cost?

I might be interested, depending on price. Someone fitted a 68 and later dash pad on my 67, so I'd like to correct it eventually. I was planning on getting the Glass Action repro, but if the price comes out better than that, I'm definitely in.

I just received my dash for my type 3 from Herman. It is of great quality. I had asked Herman to consider making the Ghia dashes as I need one myself and have found them impossible to fine. I've checked out the Glass Action ones...not impressed. The thing is, that's it for a repro dash. I would be more then happy to have Herman do up a dash for my ghia if I could get one. I am VERY happy with what I have received so far from him.

cost to me on the type 3 was about $300 shipped to North Dakota from overseas. Very reasonable I thought.

Some fiberglass repros currently on the market leave a significant gap at the windshield posts due to shrinkage once out of the mold. If you're also working in fiberglass, see if it's feasible to add a bit of extra width for a better overall fit. Might only need another 5 or 6mm.

Also, the top surface shouldn't be too shiny...it reflects back in the windshield.

Would not be of FG but of ABS and Will be taking measurements of car to make sure the Dash has the correct dimensions.

As I do not make a mould off the old dash but CNC machine a mould to the correct dimensions using the scan of the old dash as a guide in shape and fit.

Now I am giving away too much information. Laughing

This is why it would be important to make the most needed dash or the unobtainable dash as competing with a pull off FG mould is not possible, the only advantage is the quality is better in looks and fit.

If you can do production over the next few months I'd be interested. Beyond that I'll probably already have a replacement installed and reluctant to go back.

Herman, Good luck with this venture. Your thread reminds me that there is a lot of VW specific knowledge out there in your part of the world. VWs were (and are being) manufactured at the VW plant in Uitenhage. I had a couple of Beetles from that plant in the 1970s and I see a lot of Golfs from it here in NZ.

Thanks,

Yes SA is still making P&A parts for the Golf One and others

We were making the Golf one under the name Citi Golf for 26 years after it stopped in Germany

The Cross Polo was developed here in South Africa.

So you can say we started the "cross" generation.

But Beetle stopped long ago, long before Brazil stopped.

Hello Herman (nice name, sounds familiar...)

I have a 1964 vert, and I am interested.
Actually I have one of those fiberglas covers, but like yet discribed, it does not fit, as it is to narrow.
If yours will fit better, I would buy one from you. Of course if the price is acceptable.

When do you think they are ready?

Regards

Markus
