We found a 65 Sundial in Colorado last summer and I'm finally ready to start the restoration. It is incredibly dry and complete for having spent more than a decade outside with just some primer on it.
It is special to me because I found it in the town I grew up in and it is my favorite bus color (velvet green). The only rust I have found is on the driver side door bottom. Otherwise more of the areas needing repair is from accident damage and a previous owner trying to fit some kind of radio and tearing up the dash.
I started on the rear because it seems to be the worst area, it will also get a new battery tray while I'm in there.
Looks like the driver's side is screaming for help....
My goal with the bus is a usable restoration that I can run a side business from (selling coffee). The primary objective is to get it back to its former camping status. I will be modifying bolt on items such as converting to front disk brakes, better gearing for the trans and a slight bump in HP so it can keep up with modern traffic. _________________ 1965 walkthrough Sundial |

Got the bus in the shop, ready to start the metal work. Most of the pieces should be here today!

hopefully one of the parts is an actual bus exhaust so you can fix the cutout in the apron _________________ regards

The last 50 years were not kind to the interior...it has to go. If it was westy stuff I would take measures to preserve it but the Sundial stuff is not very good quality or worth trying to save. Jarvis will continue to be a camper but with new stuff.
Small rodents had also taken up residence in the ceiling...
felt like I needed gloves and a mask the whole time.
better

Looks like someone tried to heat up the back of the chair to get it to recline more? wouldn't come off the tracks the metal was broken on both sides.....funny thing.... it was comfy to sit in.

Looks awesome! Have fun and that's a great idea to sell coffee - people are going to LOVE Jarvis. You'll have to figure out some kind of bus-themed cup design.
The metal around the rear right brake light looks disturbingly similar to my bus. If I didn't know any better I'd have thought it WAS my bus. (Also a '65!) |

The rest of the bus is stripped, I can get to the metal work now.
There were no shortage of self-tapping screws between 1965 and now
4 billion to go.......
getting ready to fit the rear panel
Lots of bad bodywork to fix

The only real issue I had stripping the front apart was the pin on the emergency brake lever. The search button said that it was a very common problem and I should go straight to the saws all...worked great and now I have extracted the lever. On the plus side, there is a Samba member that sells a pin with a grease fitting so this will not be a problem in the future.
I had to put the lever in a 20ton press to finally get the pin free....

Got the bus media blasted, was very reasonable and will make getting it into paint much quicker. It was a wet. glass media that I chose so there was no chance of warping the metal. Took about 6 hours and I am still super stoked as to how rust free the bus is.
