So... We all know what happened to Jack Torrance, and we all know exactly where he is.
He's still at the Overlook Hotel enjoying the party.
But has anyone ever wondered what happened to the family's trusty yellow Bug? (Book buffs have it in their head as red but in the virtual reality of celluloid it's expressed as yellow).
We'll, it turns out our yellow dub protagonist made it down the mountain come spring thaw, and eeked out a quiet existence in Colorado Springs, CO until 1991.
Found baking in the sun for a couple decades, it was dragged to Pennsylvania last year and brought to sputtering life in a small town by a few interested, but mildly dumbfounded, domestic car buffs.
I drove a couple hours each way with my young Bug-Bitten Minion this weekend to hook her up and drag her home to Ohio. The Minion has a year and a half to get her built, at which point Ohio's roads will be graced with a freshly minted airhead driving a rejuvenated Super Duper Super.
That's the plan. The smiles are already well under way.
Here she is as found
p.s. The Shining heritage outlined here has been reconstructed from (i) ancient papyrus insurance documentation dug from the bowels of the disintigrating glove box (ii) the faded to vapor Phil Winslow VW dealer decal melted into a shadow on the rear deck lid, and (iii) an overactive imagination born of exposure to exhaust plumes and rear mounted engines during developmental stages of growth. _________________ 1966 Sportsmobile Camper https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...mp;start=0

Mig welding skills will be learned on metal replacement at the typical inner front wells and at each jack point.
Passenger front behind wheel
Driver front behind wheel
Both jack points look the same, here's the worse of the two
But, thats it. Unlike Ohio bugs, the rot on this Colorado bug is localized.
Here's some shots if the rear inner wheel areas with a little trouble at the corner above the torsion bar and the rest OG patina:
Here is one of the typical condition under the fenders up front

And... Now the moment we've all been waiting for! The engine.
VW aircleaner! Bonus. Don't fret, the missing tin is in a box. Me thinks someone got lax when pulling the engine for a main seal replacement, which along with brakes, tie rods and a tank flush are part of the recent lore (I'll be surveying all). Watercoolers might not have realized that this tin is not mere cosmetic dressing.
It has some sick end play but does start right up with with the key and no pedal at all. I'll plan to start building a long block as the days count down so we can swap it out.
I know Bill, I know... What's with the dizzy right? You're telling me! Here's the scoop. The domestic boys got her running but then put on a new carb and a new dizzy, then couldn't get her to purr anymore. They tried and tried but just couldn't get her to go. Timing was jumping all over the place. Then, in a YouTube quest one of them stumbled on a video explaining that the knock-off dizzies are paper weights in a box. They swapped in some random used one and she fired right up. The mood was lost by that point and back to the Chevys and Fords they go.
One of them thinks they have the original dizzy and carb in their garage somewhere and, hopefully, will mail them to me. We'll see what developes on that front. In the meantime, the delayed stumble of mechanical advance is what it is and the bug will hiccup around for now. She does run though and is eager to please
Here is a quick look at the heater boxes. I am very satisfied.

Niiiiice!!!
Can't wait for this one.
Looks like a clean survivor with minor rust.
How did you find out about it? |
Craigslist Joey. It popped up on Youngstown litterally as I refreshed the window on my phone in a pre-bed waste of a minute. I saw the pans and thought to myself... This thing can be rescued into service as a first-car without too much difficulty. Heck what else am I going to do with all this air in my head? Might as well pass it on I said. My better half is like.. wait a minute, this is a bug! Lol _________________ 1966 Sportsmobile Camper https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...mp;start=0

How many Beetles do you have now? Every time I bought another one my wife would tell me I could only drive one at a time. _________________ www.vwnos.com [email protected]

Make sure you replace the tin around the engine compartment. I'm sure you know how important it is.
I think Beetles are the best first cars for a child. It was mine. Many of life's lessons are learned by driving an older model car. _________________ www.vwnos.com [email protected]

Nice solid pan and heater channel bottoms. Looking forward to watching as you get into it.
