That looks like me as a kid! Black Vans and under a Bug! Watch out, the kid may end up turning that hobby into a career. Plus side, it is a great paying career if you are good!
Bug looks good and fun! Enjoy the time spent with the kid during the process! _________________ Jimbo

Don't think I ever saw that bug running around here.
Rot is fairly typical IMO, the usual holes. but if you like it that's great

What Ohio bugs? Seriously, they are all dust. Its crazy what the road salt does to them here. You never see them on the road just driving around anymore. I was amazed to see that there was still an aircooled "scene" when I stumbled onto the Samba researching stuff about the Cali Super rat that is in my other thread. Don't take them for granted where you are! This one is a gem as far as I'm concerned. _________________ 1966 Sportsmobile Camper https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...mp;start=0

Ah, yes, a Colorado car is a thing of beauty and a joy forever. Kinda like a Cali car, but much closer to home.

Replacing a bumper now? I was expecting a tear down and then some welding. Are we getting ready to drive it this summer? Kids can be so impatient.
BTW, this recent rain has done a nice job of washing the roads clean of salt here in PA - hoping they can stay clean. But these days, even a forecast of 1 inch of snow will get the salt trucks out in force - probably a "use up the salt budget or lose it" mentality. _________________ '91 Vanagon Westfalia

Those days are gone. They started throwing salt down on the roads in 2016. Colorado Springs winters aren’t too bad but they are long so you have to contend with that stuff jus about six months of the year. _________________ 88 Vanagon tintop Subaru ej25

Roads are salted just like everywhere else, not new. Perhaps new in some areas. My FIRST bug rusted out so bad the floor was falling out, but here they only rust if you drive them. Sitting does little harm because....
We don't have any -humidity- to speak of, barely any air either. |

It is so great to see a young lad being handed the gift of manual labor and the art of self reliance. They really need to start teaching these trades in the schools again!
I enjoy seeing you teach the boy how to work. He will thank you, every time he reaches for a tool, and think, “My Daddy taught me this.” I thank my father, grand father and 5 uncles everyday for the gifts they taught me! _________________ Jimbo

I mistakenly bought a small Snap-On tool carrier (size of a paper back book,) on eBay last year. I thought I had bid on a full 1/4" vintage set but I bid/won an empty box instead. Since I couldn't really return it since it was my fault, I decided to restore it and filled it with my extra tools, so I ended up building a kit for my 4 1/2 year old son. He absolutely loves it. Those are HIS tools and he has used them plenty helping me around the house. I'm ready to get him out to the garage to work on the bug. _________________ **1971 Super Project

Hey Joey, that is awesome to read! Love it when the trades are being handed down!
Buying the empty tool tin was not a mistake, there are no mistakes in life. It is life redirecting you back onto the path you had been meant to be on.
My Dad let me have the metal carrying case that his new propane torch came in. It was small, but it was my tool box. I was maybe 4 or 5. I remember it being green Had a small hammer, a screwdriver, pliers and a square. I still have the screwdriver and the pliers! When I open those drawers on the toolbox, a past memory hits me. It is great! _________________ Jimbo

Well the seasoned patina hood is a sloooooow go with the wire wheel on the angle grinder. Funny thing is that the $15 Harbor freight grinder has been running strong for over a year. The $40 Porter Cable grinder I picked up on the way home from work began letting out the magic smoke after about fifteen minutes and stumbled to a stop. Go figure.
Enough with the grinding.... Its back to harbor freight for an add-on for the air compressor
$60 well spent on the little sandblaster. Check this out (just a little test as the sun goes down)
Quick coat of self etching rattle primer just for the next few days as the rains are coming. We'll be back.

Buy you a piece of shitake mushroom beetle and call it good? Lmao I am totally kidding and totally with you on the warm thought. Thank you! I am totally blessed that one of my minions has the bug for wrenching and bugs. What a great way to spend time. Out there grinding rust off an old bug with him and I feel like "the richest man in town." (George Bailey reference). Thank you for the kind words Allamaabroad. _________________ 1966 Sportsmobile Camper https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...mp;start=0

I would say the goal is a clean daily driver and we're just going to keep it stock.
The sandblaster was on sale for a little over $60. It hooks up to the air compressor. I can't wait to play with it some more because it sure seems like it's going to make things easy. I spent 35 bucks on 30 lbs of glass beads at Harbor Freight and was through them real quick because I had the pressure set low at 40 psi and then 80 psi. Our cousin who's a body man says I should really run it at about a 125 psi. and I'll go through much less blasting material for the same result. So now I went up to Lowe's and bought a 50 pound bag of play sand for about three and a half dollars. If we get the hang of this machine it will open up a whole new world for restoration ideas. Hopefully more pictures soon pray for sun! _________________ 1966 Sportsmobile Camper https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...mp;start=0
