New member, new VW, new problem..Does it matter how the washer hoses are connected to the switch? I pulled the steering wheel to replace the bearing and bushing. Don't know if the washers worked at this point. When I removed the wiper/washer switch, i noticed the hose from the bottle had become disconnected. The hose to the squirter was connected to the bottom hose nipple. Reading Dave's aircooled article, it stated to connected the hose from the bottle to the bottom nipple, which I did. After everything was back together, I decided to ops check the washer. Filled the washer bottle, and connected the pressure hose to the spare tire. Fluid immediately started to squirt on the windshield. When I pulled on the washer lever to actuate it the water stopped. Let loose and it started up again. Would improper hose connections cause this, or is it just a bugged up switch? Thanks..Tommy |

My windshield washer works, I can explain the setup on mine, and probably others.
There are two ports, one is labeled B and the other is labeled D.
When installed, the B port is on the bottom.
The bottle hose goes from bottle, through the firewall and directly to the B port (bottom).
The nozzle hose is attached to the D port (top) then finds its way through the firewall behind the radio, into the airbox and then to nozzle.
There may be an issue with the plunger on the valve inside the assembly.
Hope this helps. _________________ 74 Super Sun Bug - OTTO

Thanks...I figured it was probably the switch..Just seems odd that it works backwards. Thanks again.. |

I have tried 2 vendors to obtain an operational wiper switch and every one of them has failed. The valve for the washer is constantly "on" and just sprays until it runs out of water or pressure. Has anyone else had this problem? How did you resolve it? Thanks |

Hi All!
I have a 72-79 Beetle washer switch/valve in my Bay. It was the only valve I could find to buy, from Cip1.
Can anyone tell me the correct way to hook up the hoses? On the valve there is one plastic tube that is "center" and one that is "off center" ( hope that made sense). Which is the input? There are no marks on the valve.
Valve has apparently gone bad. Like the above poster, the water doesn't turn off, just runs till the tank is empty. Valve seems to (kind of) work with hoses either way. For 2 years system has worked until now. I just want to investigate a little further, ( maybe some junk got in the valve).
But what is the correct way to hook up the hoses
Thank you! |

I've had my 1970 sedan and 1971 Super Convertible since the 1970s, second owner. My experience is that these washers SUCK, and I've installed inexpensive electric windshield washer systems in both. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. My original spare tire powered windshield washer is broken. Water pours out of the steering column when I use it. When I have time, I plan to repair it - no matter what it takes. Why?
1. Because it sucks
2. Because it’s probably the most ridiculous and absurd thing VW ever put in a car
3. Because it’s stock
4. Because my car is not a daily driver
5. Because it’s there
Who would plumb water 💦 up into a steering column? Madness! _________________ 1956 Beetle Ragtop: My Father's car

I have no problem with the original design. Simple concept.
Getting replacement rubber parts that are descent these days is the problem.
Yes, I will try an electric pump from the LAPS. |

Ditch It!!
Have a '70 Ghia. Washer switch is on the dask. Glues a small Push button switch to the back of it, ran it to a small electric pump - works great - still use original bottle. Did the same with a 95 Mexi. Tooo EZ. _________________ 79 Westy
