I'm looking at getting my first Westy, and the owner sent me a video of the engine running. I just wanted to get your input on how it sounds. He said the engine was rebuilt 5 years ago. It's a 1978.

Thanks! |

That engine has some valve train noise probably just needs adjusting it may be a hydraulic lifter engine that has a lifter problem. Not too big a deal though. _________________ 1960 Beetle And 1679cc DP W-100 & Dual Zeniths! |

pretty sure it's got a few exhaust leaks as well. _________________ some days I get up and just sit and think. Some days I just sit.

Both holes in exhaust (low frequency roar) and leaks at exhaust manifolds (higher frequency ticks)
I can't hear any valve train noise over the exhaust racket. _________________ .ssS! |

Sounds like either a leak right at the head or a head gasket itself is leaking. Like abscate I can't hear any valve train noises over the others. |

there is a exhaust leak in there and some kind of a mechanical sound, high pitch light tick. Don't think it is a valve adjustment. Not heavy enough to be a bearing. Maybe piston slap from being cold. Best guess Passenger side.
Richard Atwell has a plethora of engine sounds on his web page. Maybe you can find one that sounds a little like it.

Welcome to the samba,
That audio makes the engine sound noiser than it should. Sounds a little scary to me.
Best if you could hear it in person. |
