So I want to upgrade the engine in my super to a powerful type 4 motor. What would be the best performance transmission for the price?

Give Rancho a call on it and see what they say and can provide.
If you are going with a new engine, may as well do a new trans.. RB

Having one guy that has a passion for building vw trans do it vs a large conpany has lots of advantages.

Another vote for Scott.
My everyday driver below with his trans. It survives a brutal commute and below weekend fun

I'll throw another recommendation for Scott, as he helped me through choosing what gears and upgrades I needed. But, he's across the country and shipping both ways adds $200 to the price. I sent him a single side cover case as a core, so he could use the 3.88 gears and other parts..
If you're looking local to NJ try Matt Steedle

I know of several people beating on his transmissions and have heard nothing but praise. Hell of a nice guy too.

A lot of people over here in the UK buy Rancho transmissions 'off the shelf' and quite a few have problems. I bought a trans from KCR and had a good few problems. Ended up taking it to a guy in this country who has sorted everything and was telling me the Rancho 'off the shelf' boxes come to him for fixing (via the UK supplier of Rancho stuff) when there's problems. Take that info for what you will.

What do you consider "powerful"?

What type of driving? Hills, highway, local roads, track?

Gary Berg built my Berg 5 with a ZF LSD.. not cheap but great performance.

@Gleen mostly road way and highway. Maybe track occasionally. When i say preformance i mean better then stock. Like could a stock transmission handle a powerful type 4 motor? Im not sure. I know nothing about it. I just figured because if I swap my car to manual, i gotta replace tranny anyways. So maybe a "better" then stock tansmission is good. But like i said. I don't know

A stock 1600 Type 1 is 48hp. As stock 2.0l Type 4 is maybe 60hp.

You can used a stock tranny with a 200hp engine... as long as you don't drop the clutch. A type 4 is no more powerful than a equally built Type 1.

Have a friend that has a stock 64 tranny with a 2275 and it lasted 2 years when he finally had the money to build a beefed up tranny. The original 64 is still fine.

Ok so it will work. My only concern is that im going to have to buy a transmission anyways if i convert the autostick. So maybe in the future. If i upgrade it i can save some money buy not having to buy another tranny and maybe save a few hundred dollars.

Why a Type 4?

Type 1s can produce plenty of power.

Maybe I'm missing something, but what body is on the car? Neither a Type 3 nor Type 4 motor will fit a Bug rear apron (Super or not), right?

Several buddies and I have had great results from Transaxle Engineering in Chatsworth, CA. They build off-road and race, too; actually that's more their cup of tea. Never heard a complaint.
