|

Hello-
I am looking for a new gas tank to fit into my dune buggy restore (1974 bug).
It's a fiberglass body. The one that was in there when i bought it was cut at the spout; weld closed; and reopened to meet in the center of the hood.
I do not want to do that as it occasionally leaked. Aside from making a new cut in the fiberglass to accommodate a side filler, does anyone sell new modified tanks?
Thank you,
Mark |

Probably nobody..... My solution was to buy new tank, mark, cut, drill etc, and have welder acquaintance weld it all in place....

Thanks Dale. I think you are correct that nobody sells them. I've been looking.
I do work for a company that has welders and we can do an occasional "government" job and one of our guys would surely do it for me.
I also thought of keeping the tank as is, simply making a cut in the hood wherever the fill spout lands; and then put an emblem or some kind of cover over the existing hole in the fiberglass.
Thanks again. |

Interesting idea on the Bolt-On Gas Tank Filler Neck Kit.... I'd would then still need to weld the open neck area.... Any clue on how connect a sending unit? |

Put reserve valve under tank like early bugs...

Those bolt on filler necks are a cool idea. But you miss out on a lot of tank volume that way. In a buggy, the tank is on more of a slope than that of a Beetle, so it traps air up higher. If you want the most use of your tank, get a welding shop to weld a neck either center top or like Dale showed, P-Side top.
It goes without saying, a used tank has to be cleaned to weld on it safely. Advantage to the bolt on filler neck in that instance. _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class

Hi Mark,
If you decide to go the route of purchasing an aftermarket tank for modification, you may want to also inspect the bottom threaded attachment where the fuel line attaches. Years ago, I bought a gas tank from texasbuggies.com, and after installation I noticed a small gas leak.
Since you may end up modifying a tank anyway, I figure what the heck, run a bead of brazing around the lower attachment if you have any doubts about it.

That is how my first buggy was set up, only it was a piece of the original filler neck from an early '60 Bug tank welded onto the flat spot where the gauge sender used to be. The tank only held around 9 gallons and the reserve as only about 0.8 gallon because of the angle of the tank. That bolt on filler and a late tank with a short section of hose and a cap to plug the rear fuel inlet would be no welding solution. _________________
