The Streetcar next to the red Beetle is known as a President’s Car or PCC (Presidents’ Conference Committee)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCC_streetcar
Back in ’92-’93 I was working in western New York State at Morrison-Knudsen in Hornell, NY as a production consultant.
It was during that time that San Francisco Muni was having Morrison-Knudsen restore a fleet of President’s Cars.
So about every two weeks a freshly and brightly painted President’s Car would come out of the paint shop.
Each car was painted different colors of Muni and other transit agencies in the US, and most of the color combinations were beautiful on these streamlined cars.
The cars originally came mostly from discarded cars from SEPTA line, that the City of Philadelphia hadn’t scrapped.
They were in horrible condition when they arrived in Hornell, but the design and construction are so simple that restoring these cars was no problem for the experts in Hornell.
You can see and ride in these cars on the F line in San Francisco or read more here https://www.sfmta.com/getting-around/muni/historic-streetcars

Those are really cool, they look alot like the trolley buses that used to operate here in Vancouver.

There are a few of the SEPTA PCCs here in Colorado awaiting restoration. They look like crap, with clouded plexiglass windows and interior paint jobs with runs everywhere, by-products of a low-budget, 1980s fleet renovation.

PCC cars are great.

If you hunt for them there are some good videos from El Paso, TX showing how they're restoring their PCC cars.

What's nice about their fleet is that the cars they're restoring are original El Paso cars that they put into storage when they shut down their line back in 1974. Whoever was smart enough to hang on to them deserves a medal.

The Newark, NJ City Subway used them up to a few years ago. Their acceleration was breathtaking.

Small world, I worked in Hornell in 2004 as a production planning consultant. WMATA 2k/3k rehab. It was Alstom Transportation at the time.

I ride a PCC car every so often. Where I live in Boston still has ONE trolley line operating them. I wish I could say they do it for historical value, truth is our transit system here is terrible and I live in the poorest part of the city, so guess who gets the 80 year old trolley cars?

Weirdly enough it is the most reliable line, even in winters.

Good article about how it's almost the end of the line for the Toronto PCC cars, and how they've wound up all over the world:

The 60-70s sales of the TTC streetcar fleet to other countries were mostly cars that still had service life. They sold the junk ones locally. Usually to farmers for storage or accommodation for temporary farm labour.

Here's one outside of Guelph Ontario

A newly rebuilt San Francisco PCC hits truck. PCC wins, but will need major work.

Quote:
Around 8:30 p.m. on New Year’s Day, the newest PCC streetcar to reenter regular service following a complete rebuilding collided with a large box truck while returning to the carbarn after completing its day’s work on the F-line. The impact knocked the streetcar, No. 1063 (painted to honor Baltimore Transit), off the track and turned the truck on its side. No injuries had been reported by the time this post was made. The streetcar had no passengers aboard at the time of the collision.
