I started stripping the old clear off the clk's. What a PITA!
Making progress, still have a long way to go:

I installed a new fuel pressure regulator:
New passenger side mirror:
CLK progress:
Got a nice set of OG turn signals, no pics though.
I got some good pipes to fix my exhaust leak, only one of my originals turned out to be bad. I spent many hours wrestling with these, man! It's much quieter now, seems to run smoother as well.

It's running and driving better and better. The throttle response has improved and it's smoother. You can tell in the video it bogs a little when the throttle is let off. I don't it notice when driving. Before I changed the exhaust the idle would rev up and down when put in park, that seems to have improved.
I am having an issue with startups, it often takes more cranking than it should to get started. And when it first starts up it runs rough at first, like it's missing or something. I'm thinking either the Temp II sensor or a fuel delivery issue is the cause. Any thoughts? _________________ "A rolling bus gathers no rust." |

I'm not wildthings, but I think your motor sounds pretty darn good running and revving.
Why's your alternator/PS pump still shaking/squeaking a little bit? I know you replaced the bracket. Or is that part of the "bogging"?
For weak starting, I know what helped mine was tightening up all the wiring to and from the starter. Replaced all the female spades at the starter, cleaned the males, new alt harness all that. That and super clean grounds/new ground cables seemed to help mine a lot.
I'd add 02 sensor checks to rough running when cold, but I am not a diagnostics wizard. _________________ 1991 Vanagon GL 2.1 AT Westfauxlia. "Frankie" Totaled https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=764510&highlight=carnage

Thanks Mike
I'm not sure if it's a belt, a bearing or something else that's causing the sqeak. I notice it squeaks when the engine stumbles a little after letting off the throttle. The alternator bracket is good and I have the gowesty "alternator fix" reinforcement on it. It feels solid.
I will follow your advice and clean up all the connections, I've been meaning to do that. _________________ "A rolling bus gathers no rust." |

Would it start at all with the bad ignition switch? Seems like it would either work or it wouldn't. I don't know though.
Mine requires too much cranking before starting. _________________ "A rolling bus gathers no rust." |

Mine did start just took a while now it is sharp and fast almost instant old one looked burned form some much cranking. Old one felt loose too new one is tighter. For $11 and 30min install it's worth it to see. Make sure at the botton the stering colum gets pushed back up put mine back together and the bolt and the wheel looked shoeter than before redid it and push collum back up and was nice and tight. |

Finally got the pop top clean:
When you don't want to spring for a RMW bumper but want something there in the meantime. The "Appalachian Mountain Westy" edition:
I also got all the locks working, fixed the latch that holds the sliding door open and installed a new Bosch Temp II sensor. _________________ "A rolling bus gathers no rust." |

I haven't read through the whole thread so you might have already discussed it, but the bogging down when it returns to idle makes me wonder if your throttle position switch is working correctly. |

I had a similar wooden rear bumper on my '80 Westfalia. It was a 4"x4" fence post with the stock plastic ends and rubber strip down the middle. _________________ Casey--

I pulled the tank and resealed it with a kit from van-again. Got it reinstalled and filled it up and no more gas smell detected so far!
