Have you tried filling the carb float bowl with fuel first? With that the engine should run a minute or more causing the fuel pump to prime up.
If you do disconnect any wire from the coil, pull the small one going to the distributor. The other small wire at the cable is not fused. So that wire happens to ground while you turn the engine over, it can fry the wiring harness. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Check your fuel lines at the pump are not backwards. The top bib is the in, the bottom bib is the out, and goes to the carb. It's hard to see in the picture but I think it's backwards. |

Shorten up the flexible fuel lines between the fuel pump and carb. Metal fuel line should not be touching other pieces of metal, like the fan shroud. Metal pieces vibrating will rub and cut holes in each other. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Ok yep that's right. I couldn't see they crossed behind the distributor in the other picture.
You can try to put your hand over the carb throat when someone cranks the engine. If you block the air, the carb will pull a huge vacuum and help pull the gas through the pump and gets the air block out. |

That's a great tip! Be careful when fuel reaches carb, this mega-choke method will flood the engine in just a few seconds. _________________ Additional products https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/search.php?username=Wayne+S.+Johnson

Yeah just do it for a second or two at a time. Fuel pumps don't like to pump air. Once the carb pulls hard enough to get fuel pumping and the air block moving, it will pump normally. |

Filters are rarely full, and during warm weather they can look empty while the engine keeps on running. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Mine is never full. I gave up trying to find out why years ago. I've never had fuel starvation issues, so I've elected to ignore it |
