Yesterday I finished welding up the pan to the outer bolt flange & then knocked down the high spots with a grinder & then slathered them down with some Ospho.
This morning I vacuumed the pan off..
Then scuffed it with some 80 grit.
Once done, I wiped the pan down multiple times with acetone.
Then shot it with some self-etching primer.
And finally, a coat of bedliner.

Thanks Abscate, good to see you branching out of the bay forums.
While they were easy to access, I decided to replace the rear brake hoses.
And I also opted to vacuum the detritus off the engine.
Oops, no after pic.
There’s lots of other stuff I’d like to to before the body goes back on but I gotta get this damned thing off the lift. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Wellll, body back on, front brakes work, I still need to install passenger rear typeIII drum & backing plate & both rear wheel cylinders.
Upon cleaning up all the crap that I pulled out of the Ghiapet, I found that this sign resembles the shape of the drivers side floor pan.
ALCOHOL AND DRUGS PROHIBITED.
VIOLATORS WILL BE EXECUTED?!?
And I spent a few minutes beating the front fender back out.
ANNND, the joys of resurrecting an old car, what exactly was the reason that it was put out to pasture? The brakes? the floors? The electrical system? Well, I get to add a new possibility, when I went to start it, it spit #3 plug out of the head, I guess all the detritus that I vacuumed up must have been holding it in place. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

I finally got around to painting & reassembling the passenger side typeIII brake backing plate, I noticed that the return spring was riding on top of the relief instead of in it, that’s when I realized that someone swapped the parking brake spreader bars from one side to the other. I confirmed this when I looked back at the pics in this thread when I did the other side. Good thing that I still need to take the other side apart to replace the wheel cylinder.

So the Ghiapet sat outside overnight & it rained, I now understand the tarp as I have apparently done an excellent job of making a drivable rain water reclamation device.

Yes, it looks great... from a distance. Any closer than New Jersey then it loses some of it's luster.
I got a set of hinges to replace the broken one on the lower driver side from a fellow Sambanista THANKS ChrisMay!
They were a bit stiff from sitting so I soaked them in some used ATF overnight.
Then heated them ever-so-slightly to get them to loosen up & work the oil in.
I thought about polishing them up, but I got over that pretty quick, so I removed the old one.
After installing the new one, I saw that I needed to shim it up a bit so I made a shim out of some scrap that I had laying around, Then adjusted the striker.
HOT DAMN!!! I don't have to pick up on the door to close it anymore!

With a feeling that I needed to put my hands on the Ghiapet for a few moments every day, I decided that today I would see what I could do to the typical dented nose.
So I got out my drill, slide hammer, & a gallon of Bondo...JUST KIDDING!
I got out my small dead blow hammer & my BFH and then started to try to massage out the nose, the ridge was obviously damaged so while perusing the scrap bin for something that I could use as a dolly, I came across this.
PERFECT!!!
So, in about 20 minutes, I tapped & pounded the nose into a bit more presentable shape.
I actually have a Ghia without filler in the nose

How are your welding skills? |
Half ass decent considering I just use a flux core MIG, I can really lay them down & stitch shit up with a gas fed but I only have the flux core for simplicity.
I had a buddy that wanted me to replace the lower 6" on his Bay window, I told him that I'd do it in return for a NICE welder & supplies, the dopey bastard didn't think that was a good deal.
And I don't go anywhere that doesn't honor my state's CCW reciprocity agreement, so that keeps me out of most of the blue states. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

I had to let the GhiaWET stay outside again & I definitely need to source the windshield & back window gaskets.
Here's the rain flowing down the ends of the dash...
And pooling on the rear tray...
And the floor again.

Nope, I'm pretty sure they're beyond redemption.
Now, if anyone has any suggestions for where to procure new gaskets, I'd love to hear it.

Well... I finally got off my ass & picked up the rest of the parts from the POs place.
I don't think that it was worth the time.
It looks like the parts were stored outside in their own rain water retention ponds.
And I'm not sure that I'm going to use the bumpers.
