Hi,

I am about to paint a 1960 Karmann Ghia T14 L364 Stratos blue and L363 Artic blue.
I am looking for formulas for model paint but can't find it!!!
I use Dupont Cromax but can go for different one is nescessary.
I would very much appreciate if someone could help.

Many thanks
Steph

Not sure if any of this will help you find the exact info you seek, but something here may at least get you closer ...

If you haven't already, you may want to post your question in the Body/Paint Forum here on The Samba.

The Online Karmann Ghia Resource website has this Karmann Ghia Paint & Color Codes chart which includes the original VW paint formula for the L364 color.

The KarmannGhia.org website has this scan of page 18 from the March 1959 Volkswagen Paint Chips and Mixing Formulas manual which lists the original VW paint formulas for both the L363 and the L364 colors.

This "Need a little help on 1960 Ghia colors" thread previously posted here in the Ghia forum has some PPG cross reference color codes that may help.

Also, if automotive paint shops have the ability to scan a sample and create a matching formula (as hardware and home improvement stores can do with house paint), then perhaps you may want to consider buying one of these NOS Arctic White L363 L-363 Arktis touch-up paint tubes from The Samba Classifieds.

Colour on-line is a great resource.
http://coloronline.glasurit.com Have a look yourselves though its a bit clunky to use. i.e. you have to select the results even it it finds only one . that applies to results in each box before it moves on.

I get this result for 1 KG of the two colours and your paint guy should be able to translate these formulae for other paint makers formulae.

Glasurit Line 55
L364 STRATOBLAU 1960-1976

Make 1 Kilogram
Base........Amount......Cumulative
352-91......165.8........165.8
M25..........605.0........770.8
M105........122.0........892.8
A974.........52.3.........945.1
A556.........41.0.........986.0
A353.........14.0.........1000.0

Two options here

Glasurit Line 22
L363 ARKTIS 1959-1973
Make 1 Kilogram
Base........Amount.......Cumulative
M0 ..........152.1..........152.1
M60 ........809.6..........961.6
M26 .........27.4...........989.0
M68 ...........9.8...........998.8
M146 .........1.3.........1000.0

and..

Glasurit Line 68
L363 ARKTIS 1959-1973
Make 1 Kilogram
Base........Amount........Cumulative
M135 ......223.4...........223.4.g
T002 .......734.3...........957.7.g
T920 .........30.2...........987.9.g
T600 .........10.7...........998.6.g
T150 ..........1.4..........1000.0.g

The top one is arctic blue and strato blue is under it Smile
We compared these 2 with og paint on my 60 to make it match!

Do you have a photo of your Strato Blue Beetle you could share?

I'm thinking Chrome Blue but that is a tad bright, Starto looks more subtle but still in the same color family.

Thanks!

Dave

Hello Dave,

It's not a beetle, it's a 60 ghia Wink

Sadly the og paint is only on parts that were not that easy to access or that I polished strongly..the car is in terrible condition (will be restored)..

Hello Antoine,

I think you also sent me a pm which I have only just logged on and seen (sorry), did you manage to get your paint mixed, I would be interested to hear where from as I may want to get a small amount of work done myself in the future.

Here is a picture of my car for colour references, also a 1960, I think its a one year only colour.

Hello,

For me it's not that urgent, as my fhia is still far from painting but we checked with "Cholu" and found the color. I am sure he will come here again and give you all informations!
By the way, wonderful ghia you've got, really inspiring and motivating Very Happy

Have a nice evening
