I know that fabric is for a Zwitter and it's only an example of what he's capable of. He is who I buy all of my period correct fabric from, his stuff seems to be spot on and he's very knowledgeable. |
His material is spot on. I have ordered his material for several splits I have restored and have not been disappointed. Currently finishing a black 52 with his material. He is very easy to deal with. |

Well today I started to pull the beam apart to clean, grease and paint. Holy Hell what a chore. I don't think the link pins have been removed in years. Looks like I have a very leaky steering box. I will have to sort out what to do with that in the next few days. What has me worried is that the tie rods were pretty much glued to the pitman arm, I had to use a pickle fork to break them loose. In doing so I damaged these little washers.
I also noticed that the long tie rod is adjustable but the short rod seems that the ends are crimped on (second and third picture)
So my question, Is there a source for the washers out there? What do most people do with the tie rods when replacing them? These ends seem to be in good condition other than they have not been maintained in a very long time. I don't believe I can use them without the proper washers. I did a search for split tie rod ends in the classified but no results. _________________ Ethan Dunlap

well...in the future there is a much better tool for removing tie rods which may have saved your original washers.
as far as replacing the cover washers goes..

Well a little progress has been made, this is getting expensive making it a driver.
I had the steering box rebuilt by a Samba member (OMT) he did a wonderful job. I ordered new washers for the tie rods. Front end is done. I installed new German kings & Links. cleaned all the rust and dirt off and gave it a fresh coat of paint.and new shocks
Also cleaned up an extra trans , I bought the Fast Fab mount so that I do not have to alter the car.
Also had Apple Hydraulics rebuild the rear lever shocks.
I got a few goodies in for the motor, like I said before this is just to get her back on the road. The spare 36er I had ended up being a pile of jung. bad cylinders , and parts of the case had been patched with JB weld. A buddy hooked me up with a better case. So now everything is just about new.
WW Kit
This is the look I am shooting for ( borrowed pic motor built by Joe Ruiz AKA Mr.Okrasa )
I started by cleaning the case the best I could. And I stripped the tins at the same time.
Got the motor buttoned up
and started fitting the tins and cutting them for the intakes
my assembly line;
Here soon I hope to have them primed and ready for paint. I sent my 019 off to Glenn for him to work his magic. I am also waiting to hear back from John on my harness. He was missing a few things he has on order from Germany. I also have all new brake parts except the MC I am not sure what to get yet, I even started a thread asking about it. But I have all new shoes, hard lines, soft lines , wheel cylinders and hubs. _________________ Ethan Dunlap

I was hoping to have it driving by the Texas Classic, but the harness may not be ready before then, and the car can not be driven with the state of the current wires. and as Will said I won't be doing a full blown resto until after the ghia is finished. I would have to get a divorce for the Split to get in front of the ghia...lol _________________ Ethan Dunlap

No the 36er I have built is a total separate motor. I currently have my 25hp disassembled, cleaned and packed away awaiting the BC and the decision on what to do. If the motor is the original motor , which there is a good possibility since the numbers are 3/51 and the car is a 3/51, I will probably wait until I am ready to restore the car to rebuild it. If it comes back and it is not numbers matching I will probably just stick with the 36er. _________________ Ethan Dunlap

I was hoping you were going to say by the time of the classic, hopefully it works out. It's funny you say that cause mine almost caused a divorce as well. |

Well a little more progress, running gear is back on and she is close to being a roller. I got the trans, front and rear brakes installed, lever shocks and new hard and soft lines. I am waiting on the master cylinder to come so that I can finish up the brakes.
A few things stumped me and it took way longer than I thought to install the trans with the fast Fab nose cone mount. I decided not to por 15 the pans. I figured since it will not see rain unless i get caught out in it. and will be kept in a climate controlled garage that would be just one more thing
strip off once I blow it apart.
I know wrong backing plates but it is what was on the car and what I have to work with at this point in time.
Glenn rebuilt the 019 for the motor.

Well a little more progress.
Brakes are ready. and if I had tires she would be a roller again. Started cutting up the tin to fit the WW Okrasa kit. I also got the tins in primer. I plan on painting the tins this weekend at a friends house. (he has a booth) I also got the NOS tank primed. Talked to John H and he is sending out the main harness so I can get started on it. I sent my generator out to be rebuilt. Hopefully that will be in soon.
enjoy the photos
I know wrong trans but at least I cut off the shock mount and installed one piece boots.
The 356 MC fit without me having to alter the reservoir
nice having the running gear back on feels like I am getting somewhere
Started fitting the tin
and my backyard spray booth. I know hillbilly style but I will be spraying them in a booth this sunday
Link
Well on another note does anyone have a lead on a trunkliner. I emailed Wolfgang Gips and he said that they are no longer available. but he did send me a picture of the one I need, but I can not find any other source.
Any help would be great if you know of a source. _________________ Ethan Dunlap

awesome progress!!
I am wondering why the conical washers are not seated against the body of the tie rod end? they should be tight, holding the grease inside.
I would uninstall this tie rod end and fix it. _________________ drive your split. |

I did not mean to post that picture I actually used it in another thread https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=695127&highlight= , I had installed them just like I took them off. The spring was behind the washers, I have put them on correctly now.

Just FYI, they don't come riveted or stapled from KN. _________________ Gone but not forgotten: 1950 Hoffman split (restored in 1966) - another 1950 Hoffman split (restored in 1996) |
