1st owner that we know of.
Kelly...email from owner 8/2016
I used to own this car, actually it's pictured here in my yard. Unfortunately I only had it for a short time as we had other projects on the go. I don't have any history. We bought it from an elderly couple in pt Elliot sa, I believe they had had it quite some time and it had been sitting in the shed
Kelly Kies Mm no but I'll ask mum she knew the people. I'm so pleased it's getting some love and yes please I'd love to see the progress. The people we got it from called him hermie
Email from 2nd owner Lucy.
wow, the most beautiful beetle I ever owned, I would love to come visit Stella some time if possible. Not much info unfortunately, I bought the car from a guy in south Australia, had it shipped to my brother in Melbourne then I flew down to drive her back, she drove like a dream from Melbourne to Yass, then the fan belt gave in and she started smoking fortunately a passer by stopped and put the fire out, destroyed the engine but the car itself survived with only minor blistering, had her towed to a bug place in Cambelltown (I'll try and find the name of the shop) had a reconditioned engine put in drove from Cambelltown to the freeway before oil poured out everywhere (sigh, the memories lol) got her towed to my place in Toronto replaced the gaskets all good, went to drive her, accelerator cable snapped, replaced that and the battery and she was all good, drove her around on weekends for a bit, my partners dad's health wasn't the best so that's why I sold her, still regret it to this day, so if you every think of selling let me know first. If I think of anything else I'll let you know, really would like to see her if possible. Keep me posted on how it all goes and thank you so much for making contact with me, you've made my day.
Lucy

3rd owner..lee
I have owned Stella for 4 years and back on the road for 3. It had an updated 1300 motor from a 67 and I have converted it to 12 volt. Since i have had it i have done king and link pins both sides, replaced the clutch, carby has been rebuilt, replaced starter motor, put wider wheels on it (still have the original wheels but the whitewalls were removed), replaced master and all wheel brake cylinders. It has been serviced regularly by nymeyers but has not done many miles
Hi Jo, O'Toole's said it was the piston itself. I replaced the master cylinder not long after I got it so that should be OK. If I understand correctly the piston just fires into the master cylinder (just with your own foot pressure) and I would assume they deteriorate over time

nice little Bug, thanks for sharing.
Looks like the brake fluid might be a bit dark, time to flush it out?

oh, coming along nicely!
note to place a gasket around the gastank under the tank lip where it rests on the body. some thin rubber home weather strip will work. (like the stuff used to seal around doors, vinyl weather strip will work) this keeps air out of the trunk at highway speeds, air can be forced from under the car past the gas tank to body area if seal is not present, then the air blows thru the dash via the grills on either side of speedo, thru radio opening, around glove box. in the winter it can be a pretty cold breeze.
keep us posted!
And keep Buggin, no matter which side your steering wheel is on! _________________ Help Prevent VW Engine Fires, see this link.....Engine safety wire information

Nice work on your bug. What color is it. I have a 61 in Beryl green and am wondering if yours is the same color, hard to tell from the photos. |

Enjoying this thread, I have an engine rebuild in my future, and some body work coming up. I am pondering taking the panels for replacement I bought, into a body shop and just letting the experts handle it for me (save time, and headache) - then while they have the body, I'll rebuild the engine...mine is a '61 also, but US based so left hand drive with a ragtop. _________________ ------------------

Need rubber grommet for metal fuel line under the fuel tank where that line goes into the frame. Without grommet water and dirt will get into the frame to rust it out from the inside. Also the metal line could end up rubbing on the edge of the hole.
You need to loosen up clamps and turn the axle boots so the seams are pointing to the rear or front of the VW. Axles flex up and down as you ride down the road, but those seams do not flex properly in the position you have them now. That will rip up the boots very soon.
When you go to tighten back down the axle boot clamps, do the inner bigger ones first. Before you tighten up each of the smaller clamps, push the outer end of the boot in toward the transaxle about 3 to 6 mm. Hold it there and tighten the small clamp. This will keep the boots from ripping when the VW is jacked up off the ground. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Do get the original heat exchangers fixed sometime soon, and use those instead. The repro HEs do not heat up the interior of the VW well and can make the engine run hotter. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |
