Fall 2018:

Very similar story to Joe here.
I'm flying out to Oregon next Sunday to bring home a Syncro.
Fuel lines and an oil change then the trip home via Tahoe, Denver area, etc.
Its a high mileage rig so I'm considering swinging through Rocky Mountain Westy for bushings, shocks and anything else that is urgent. Maybe a swing away too...
Then I'll figure out which to sell and which to keep. At some point... _________________ 85 Westfalia Weekender

1) Finally admit that not having a chance to use the van more than a handful of times in the past 2 years will not change any time soon.
2) Clean it up once the snow is gone.
3) Sell it to someone who will love it as much as I have. _________________ Jay Brown

Between the expense of registering and insuring a vehicle I don't use and the guilt I feel looking at it sitting covered in dust in my driveway everyday unused, I have made up my mind.
I have been driving VW buses and vans for over 20 years. I will most likely be looking for something a little bigger (probably a Sprinter) when I have more time for camping and road trips. If I do develop a desire for another van down the road, I'm sure there will be something I can buy and rebuild to fit my needs. _________________ Jay Brown

Well, once the mercury can stay above -10c my list is as follows:
1: pull motor and rebuild.
2: drop tank to find out why it leaks more than the Exxon Valdez
3: replace fuel lines
4: finish westfalia cooker/fridge install w/propane
5: build spacers to install my Audi 16" wheels/tires
wish me luck. _________________ 9 1/2 - missing a few pieces.

1. Replace throttle body and its vacuum leaks, stupid other expenses like kitchen remodel.
2. Drive my van and camp lots and hope that nothing else breaks.
3. Consider several wish list items like preemptively replacing my tired old waterboxer with a rebuild (I'm not a conversion guy- yet), T3 front end rebuild, and/or body/paint work that would probably include a NAHT hightop or similar.
4. Stare at vans for sale and decide if I want to just buy a second van before doing all that wishlist stuff.
5. Drive my van and camp lots. _________________ 1991 Vanagon GL 2.1 AT Westfauxlia. "Frankie" Totaled https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=764510&highlight=carnage

I might get around to replacing my ignition switch but it's a preemptive measure so...
Once it warms up enough for the snow to melt I'll drive it around to confirm what I suspect is a leaking differential pan, then take it to the mechanic for repair under warranty.
Hopefully that's it, besides camp in it a bunch. _________________ '91 Westfalia GL Automatic (GTA "Turbo" Rebuild w/Peloquin) and 2.3L GoWesty Engine |

My plan is to drive it this year. I don't think I put 100 miles on it last year. _________________ 1986 Westy |

From my For What it's Worthless files...
We're full-timers and thus have met hundreds of V-Dubbers, if not more ex-V-Dubbers...
The Ex's are almost to a person sad they sold out. Some have resorted to not listening to Hendrix anymore, or failing to recall "rightie-tightie," or forgotten all about tie dye, fun, and even a hint of social abandon, they tell tales of losing track of their "dear bus friends," talks about Woodstock have become about the best way to keep short hair, tacos are suddenly too spicy, mountains too high to bother, if you mention a hot girl they talk about air-conditioning. suddenly they need more showers and have lost campfire-building skills, they weep when seeing our bus and talk about the good, old days, memories of travels with their kids resurface like a lost dog, their Missus just suddenly leaves in recalling "I have to do such and such," they never offer to show us their "replacement rig," they've gone from Guinness to light beer, they think Cholula is a town near LA, complain about all the aches and pains that started "about the time we sold the bus," they now think Barry Manilow was a powerhouse, they've forgotten blue smoke is oil, there's Viagra on the dash, when you mention the stars they reply with Susan Boyle, race cars have become "just too loud," hair turns gray before 30, jeans become Dockers, they talk endlessly about their stock portfolio and never offer a beer, their dog's gotten heavy and its bandana is long gone, debates about Ginger or Maryann get replaced by Ann Coulter or Kellyanne Conway, their bicycle has a flat, they've forgotten all about the Peace sign, and waving, and being neighborly, and they complain a Big Mac is just too darned spicy.
So while I respect your thoughts on the matter, we've all been there. Just go camping again and re-consider your future. _________________ ‘84 Westy, 2.1L with Digijet, 5.43 R+P, GT Gears

Time to go camping is a luxury I don't currently have between a full time engineering job and a side business that requires 30-35 average hours per week. My van, like any other vehicle is ultimately just a bunch of metal and steel that can be replaced if the spirit should move me in that direction. I have rebuilt, driven and sold plenty of VWs in the past and have never once looked back with regret. Someone will have the opportunity to begin or continue living their Vanagon dream and I will have money in the bank waiting for my next project to present itself. _________________ Jay Brown
