This is for sale locally...76 Westfalia...wife and I have been looking for one and this was on a local board. It's unrestored (stripes came from the dealer at original seller's request) with original paperwork. Some minor bondo that seller wasn't aware of (she didn't have it done) on the lower drivers side panels. The interior is quite nice...modestly worn, but nothing out of place and everything works. Front brakes overhauled recently and tuned....idles and runs great - no oil leaks, but odometer failed at 40000 miles and the owner (second owner) estimated 80000 miles and the engine's never been rebuilt. The rubber seals are all still good, the pop up is a little threadbare, but serviceable for another couple of years. Electrically, everything works except the horn. What worries me is the rust around the jack points....is this a serious problem? The floor pans and other beams are flaking rust, but are very solid and will probably sandblast clean. The price is $12K...could you provide me some feedback? Thank You, Mike

Rust you can see is bad, but there is always more that you can't see… 12k seems like a lot if you track recent sales of buses on here.
My two cents…

It's nice that they shined it up, but I bet in a year the body will begin its swiss cheese phase of life.
That's pretty rusty underneath - a lot of that stuff is a real pain to fix properly. _________________ '78 Bus 2.0FI

That bus should be priced based upon the undercarriage condition. (which is very 'crunchy')
Think of how much it'd be worth it to you with a faded paint job.
That's how much it's worth

I'd run from that bus. That's serious road salt rust under it. As mentioned already, you're only seeing a very small percentage of the rust. The engine's fuel injection has been removed for a lousy center mount carb.
Skills is on point. Buy it for $5kish dollars knowing it's shelf life will be a few more years before it's scrapped or someone dumps far too much money into it repairing the rust.
If you want a long term keeper bus, buy one from the dry SW USA that doesn't have road salt rust/corrosion on it. Most buses still rust in certain places but when they are exposed to road salt for a few years, BAD things happen. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

Yeah, the top side doesn't look horrible, but from below it looks like it's been parked in the ocean for quite a while, that's stage 4 cancer even if the parts haven't quite fallen off yet, they all will soon. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Wouldn't suprise me, that's hardcore battleship rust, road salt gets there eventually but doesn't usually cover every part equally on all sides, usually by the time the bottom looks like that half is already missing and it's 3/4 of the way up the body in places. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Like they all said, RUN AWAY! That rust is bad, and they want $12K? Please tell them to stop insulting your intelligence. This is $5000 maximum. Center-mount carburetor? What happened to the fuel injection? _________________ 1979 Mexico Beige Westy auto
