Im sorry to report that Tom Matulis, Torrington, Connecticut has recently passed away. Ive known Tom since the early 80s and we were like brothers going to car shows, swap meets and car events all over the Northeast. Tom was one of the earliest members of the Connecticut VW Association and also a member of the Vintage VW Club of America. He helped me start the Litchfield Bug In and continued to work with me for the next 28 years doing the show. I wanted to report this to the Samba people just to notify them. There will be a local car show in Toms memory this spring . If you have any thoughts or memories you wish to share of Tom , feel free to do so here on this forum. Chuck P |

Sux...
Tom was a fighter and didn't let his health issue stop him from working the shows.
He will be missed.
Chuck, can you post a picture of him. Some people might not know the name but will remember the face. _________________ Glenn

One of the greats. Rest in Peace, Tom, and condolences to his family and many, many friends.

We bought some of our first parts for Herbie from Tom. He was a super nice guy and we would see him at Mark's cruise night every time. Gonna miss him. I picked up my wife's mothers day present of door handles and window cranks from him and he surched everywhere for one of them. He was so adiment about finding it. The second time I stopped by his place to look at a front fender I had my son with me who was about 4 or 5 and Tom gave him a Structo dump truck from his childhood!
This wheel was one of the first things we got from Tom.
Herbie got his rear bumper from Tom also!

Tom was one of the very first people Stock Steve and I met in the hobby back in the early 80s. Always had a story to tell and a smile on his face despite his health issues. A real cornerstone of the hobby. The show scene will not be the same without him. RIP Tom...... _________________ RIP HBB (1984-2009)

... I have fond memories of everyone in the CVA, mostly back in the 80s, when we were all young and having fun with split bugs... Tom, Chuck and Steve M's family were my favorites... i'm 70 now and believe, we'll all meet up again, in our next chapter.
Thanks Chuck. _________________ 5/50, pastel green 11G - SOLD

I saw this thread when it was first posted and didn’t remember ever meeting Tom... but I think I did meet him just once at the show last May at the Tanger Outlets. I bought this plastic bug model from someone that looked like Tom. Anyway, just wanted to send my condolences. _________________ '67 Beetle L41

Tom was just "one of those guys"..friendly, generous, helpful, always enjoyed seeing him when I would cover the Litchfield Bug-In...He, Dan Climan, and organizer Chuck Pisconski made that show so enjoyable.. _________________ 2003 Samba Chummie Winner- Best Story

Was just doing a web search to see if I could find Tom and saw that he had passed in 2018. So, so sorry to hear. I am from England and wrote to Tom , a stranger but fellow VW enthusiast, before flying over and working at Camp Wah Nee summer camp in Torrington, CT in the summer of 1991. Tom said he would meet up and talk VWs whilst I was in town. On a day off Tom picked me up in his 1951 bug (on later floorpan) and we visited a few VW folks in the area and grabbed a roadside hot dog and sourkraut. I recall visiting Bill O'Brien's place in Avon, CT. In the late afternoon we ended up at his house and I met his lovely wife and kids. We sat on the rear upper porch and had home made brownies and dinner. Tom's wife let me have the recipe and I still to this day think of a lovely, generous Connecticut VW guy and his family EVERY time I eat or see a brownie. I have a photo somewhere...I must dig it out! Thanks Tom. _________________ TV Presenter - AUTO MUNDIAL on Discovery Motor Trend TV (USA), ITV4 (UK), DSTV Ignition (SA).
