|
|
My father had the book "der lastesel des wirtschaftswunders" and as a kid I used to look through the pages. I was always fascinated at the many SO options on the pick-up because my father owned one. Especially the picture of the SO14 Langmaterial-Anhänger with a couple rafters. I always wondered if such a trailer would have survived. The image of that book has always stuck in my mind for some reason.
In 2013 I got a mail from a friend that found a weird trailer with VW wheels... The trailer stood for years in an overgrown front yard of a house he daily drove by. He suspected that this could be a original SO14 trailer. So after i had a good look at the photos it had to be one. The trailer and framework for on the pick-up was still in good shape. All the lights still worked and wheels were spinning freely!! So the following weekend we struck a deal with the owner and towed it home behind my mom's car .
I did some research and I couldn't find much. The original was made by Gebr. Wolperding in Winsen. Mine is produced in 1964 and has the serialnr. 2859.
I completely restored the trailer. And with the help of some friends got it ready the night before the Ben Pon Treffen in Amersfoort. It's great to drive with the trailer and a load and watch the whole system work as it should!
Since that show I had some fun with it but never had a load that was long of big enough to make sense.
Last weekend we had a aircooled show in the Netherlands and I was asked if I would bring my trailer. So I finally took the time to build some rafters to replicate the picture that would fascinate me as a kid!
Does somebody have some more info on the company Gebr. Wolperding? It looks like they are now a VW dealer. Or does someone has an original brochure?
I only have some vague pictures of some literature. |

always loved these as well. When i was a kid and even as a teenager you could see these everywhere. Being in bavaria we just called them wolperdinger, which is quite funny, really. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolpertinger _________________ regards

Very cool display. Nice to see a commercial VW shown in context as a proper 'working vehicle'. _________________ Andy

Looks like the part on the truck bed has a slider that the load sits on, so the load can shift front to rear when going up and down hilly terrain. Do not see a pivot point on that. Might be the load is just allowed to twist on the bed platform.
Trailer top platform looks like it pivots.
This image seems to show a set of straps to hold the bed platform to the bed of the truck:
The barn door bus image seem to not show this set of straps. Do the earlier bed platforms just sit on the bed of the truck?? _________________ In Stereo, Where Available!

Have you tried to contact the dealership? Inquire if there is someone you could talk to that knows the history of the company, particularly about the SO-14.
Any chance of a video showing how the bed and trailer work when turning?
Would really like to build one of those someday! Please do post more close up images with a scale to show size. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

There is no way that the truck/trailer would be drivable unless both load-bearing areas were free to swivel AND the bed mount was also free to slide forward & backwards. The tongue of the trailer prevents the load from detaching from the loadbed. The pic the OP posted of his truck & trailer on display clearly shows both the trailer and truck attachments “swiveled”. _________________ "My biggest worry is that when I die, my wife will sell all my parts for what I told her I paid for them"-Jon

Swivel....
This pic shows how the rusty load surface (above the license plate) is already swiveled a little bit.
(The one on the truck must do the same thing + slide forward/back)

THIS is the part that always confused me ever since I first saw a photo of this setup many years ago. The whole thing made sense, but I could never get a clear shot of what made it actually work.
Money shot right here. You can see how the carriage slides fore and aft in the part that mounts to the truck bed.
