Hey folks. so last April I purchased a 73 bay. I have no idea what size type 4 I have in it. I rolled underneath and to my surprise I see that I have a 091 6 rib transmission installed. Living in Oceanside it makes driving to the surf spots in SD and north to San Clemente a good, and bearable when I see the in laws in L.A.
I want to start doing some serious surf traveling this next coming year, and start taking the bay up to Monterey, Santa Cruz and eventually a road trip to Montana to see the parents.
I have another type 4 sitting on the bench and getting ready to take apart and send out to be worked over. AS for the trans, I know the bus was originally supposed to be a 002.
My question is, what motor size and trans options should I go with for the long haul trips that I want to go on? I keep reading all the blogs and posts, but don't seem to find anything on what I am wanting to do. I am not carrying a heavy load, my self, the wife, the little bit of luggage we carry and 2 surf boards.
Are there any other surfers out there that have/had this same dilemma?

73 has a 1.7L case, what size is the one on the bench?

I drove a 73, 1.7L from Oceanside to Portland, Oregon in 24 hours.

The one on the bench came out of another 73. The owner was doing a Subaru engine swap. It's complete from the dual carbs to the exhaust, so it's a perfect candidate for a build.
