Going down hill, all of the fuel in the tank is at the front of the tank opposite of the outlets. Does it seem to happen regardless of how much fuel is in the tank? Old tanks can starve the engine for fuel in some rare cases. It is usually aggravated by a low fuel level.
Interesting points about coasting with an automatic. If the engine is running, the transmission pump is circulating fluid. Not sure how that is leading to an early demise. Engine off, that's a different story. |
There you go again, bringing logic to a thread of anecdata... _________________ .ssS! |

it's the governor that meets it demise with unpowered coasting for a long duration. it lives up in the differential housing but is lubricated by the ATF (iirc).
how/why it doesn't get enough lubrication. I've not completely explored.

I have a Vanagon in SoCal also and it had intermittent lack of power at cruising speeds. With the ECU monitor I found that I was sometimes losing injector pulse. Cleaning and exercising the three wire connection at the distributor seems to have resolved that problem.

The last dieing while turning after going downhill occurred with a nearly full tank of gas. Just not enough data yet to pinpoint the exact time and circumstances. Hopefully the ECU monitor will help when I return to Hawaii at the end of March.
