My 83 1/2 has unknown miles, but probably somewhere around 400K at this point in time. I was wondering how much vertical play there should be in the shifter. I have about 1/8" of vertical slop at this point in time. Was thinking of buying this kit, but an not yet having shifting problems:

There actually shouldn't be any vertical slop. Vertical movement at the shifter is usually caused by either the big spring being missing between the two hemispheres of the pivot ball, or the perch for the small reverse lockout spring being collapsed.
Given the mileage of your van, it would be a good idea to just replace all the plastic parts that make up the pivot bearing for the shifter. Just make sure both springs are present and in good shape when you do the overhaul.

Most of the miles on this one weren't from me. It was in horrid shape when I bought it for $400 as an emergency replacement when my daughter wasted out the engine in my '91. It had serious problems from one end to another including a odometer which had busted at something like 280K, but it kind of miraculously would start and run. I put 75K on it before that totally worn out engine finally died for reasons unrelated to its condition and now have a decent 2.1L pushing it around. |

| Well I ordered up a kit, if for no other reason than the kit was on sale. Figure if the vertical slop got much worse I would lose to reverse gear lockout. |
