I'm trying to sell my '74 Super and was hoping for some advice. I've never really sold a car before and I'm a bit lost. As I said, it's a '74 Super with auto stick, very minor rust, tan, <75k miles, new muffler.
Some of the issues:
-Radio has a short and speaker cuts out sometimes, usually when hitting a hard bump. Will work again when tapped on dash above or face of radio.
-Driver seat is worn and could use new upholstery.
-Heater box was not reconnected when muffler was replaced.
-Steering wheel wiring is crossed somehow, preventing proper operation of turn signals and horn.
-Speaker shelf needs new upholstery.
What would a good asking price be? Are there any specifics I should highlight? Anything that I should check/repair/replace before sale?
Thanks in advance! |

I won't give you specific advice, but here's some general:
Be HONEST
Post as many good and bad pictures. you don't want someone to come and say "i didn't know about these problem".
If you're not in a rush, start high since you can always lower the price.
Supers are not as desirable as Standards
Late models are not as desirable as earlier years
Autosticks are not as desirable as manuals _________________ Glenn

Extremely hard to guesstimate a value without pictures of the car. All I can say is look through the classified section and compare.
As Glenn said, be honest about your information.

Need pictures. One person's minor rust problem is another person's excuse to feed it to the crusher. _________________ Brian

If it's the super in your gallery photos, it actually looks to be in pretty good condition (although I can't see heater channels, rear quarters, frame head, floor pans etc.) If those are all solid-- and you appear to be in Illinois which can get hit with some pretty bad wintry weather-- and it runs well, I'd say you have a pretty nice specimen. None of the stuff you mention is a deal breaker IMO. As far as an actual price, I will tell you I sold a 72 super autostick last year, which I had originally priced @ $3000, but I needed to sell pretty fast so I took $2200 for it. It was solid, and ran great thanks to an engine rebuild by a fellow Samba member, and the interior looked to be pretty comparable to yours. But Glenn is right- the autostick is not as desirable. If you aren't in a hurry to sell, and since you live in an area where rust-free or minimal rust bugs may be fairly scarce, I'd probably start it around $3500-$4000 and let the buyer negotiate me down. Just my opinion. BTW I love that color. _________________ I'm the humblest guy on this board.

Beige... a pretty boring color.
Sorry if i'm being brutally honest. hopefully you'll find someone who loves it.
A good friend has the same car, a 74 beige Super Autostick. But his is a all original car with 26,000 miles and I think he paid like $6000 for it a few years ago. _________________ Glenn

Although autostik doesn’t get much love here there is a market for it, VW thought so too. |

An owner of a small used car lot told me once how to "puff up" a car to make it more attractive to a prospective buyer.
- clean the windows. Make them sparkle.
- clean the tires make them shine.
- spotless interior. vacuum the carpets. clean the headliner, dash top etc
- hang a air freshener.
I would spend a day with a spray bottle of cleaner and a roll of paper towels. Clean the front trunk and rear engine compartment.
Wash the door jambs and edges of the doors. It makes an impression.
polish the matching dent free hubcaps.
Paint the wheels.
Personally I like to see the owners manual in the glovebox. Doesn't happen often with cars that I look at. Oh, clean out the glove box too. And the ashtray. yuck. Both ashtrays.
I like Beige.

A few weeks ago, I sold the wife's 2003 PT Cruiser. I got above Blue Book for it (which wasn't much because Cruisers are unreliable money pits); but I sold it in a day and a half.
The secret is--aside from price--the presentation. I cleaned the car, inside and out. Since I had always waxed the car in the fourteen years I owned it, the paint was in very good shape. As far as yours goes, you might wash, then wax with a cleaner/wax, like Meguiar's.
I also made sure the car started at the turn of the key and ran well.
Some of the sellers on Craigslist and the Samba Classifieds are idiots. They show pictures of interiors and trunks with trash laying around. They show engines with beat-up fresh-air hoses (what? they couldn't afford six or seven bucks and fifteen minutes to replace those hoses?). Some don't even wash the car, let alone wax them. And the Windows? How long does it take to clean the windows?
As previously stated, thoroughly clean and vacuum the car. Throw away the trash. If a tune-up is necessary, do it. Adjust the brakes. The first thing I check out when buying a used car is how well it stops.
Good luck,

If you do not have the ability to detail the vehicle like mentioned above then have someone detail it for you. Does it start easy, if no then get that fixed also.
I start dinging when right away if we have to spend some bucks on things like tires, that comes off the sale price, brakes, electrical stuff not working and on.
So the vehicle in the photos maybe twenty five hundred as it is a autostick. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.
