I have a '64 bug I literally built in 2014 with spare parts, originally just for experiments. I am going to be upgrading all the brakes and wheels. The rear end has short axle with 67 Ghia backing plates, 65-67 bug shoes, early wide 5 drums. I will be converting to Fuchs and have not decided if I want 4 wheel discs or just conversion drums on back.

My questions are:
can I use the later/wider shoes inside the conversion drums?
Is it possible to use later shoes with my 67 backing plates or would the 68+ plates be necessary? Wheel cylinders as well?

Trying to get an idea on what I can do to improve these rear brakes, in addition to the conversion. I rebuilt the entire system in 2014 but desire better stopping power with the 2054. Thanks!

You would need '68 up rear backing plates and wheel cylinders to use the wider '68 up shoes. The rear brakes where 30mm wide through 1967, later rear brakes where 40mm wide. The backing plate change means the bores for the adjusters are spaced outward more on the backing plate, and the shoulder of the wheel cylinder (that bolts against the backing plate) pushes the center of the wheel cylinder further outboard.
