Post a picture of your engine.

If the engine is in the back of the car, the leak is in front of the pulley not behind it.

I have a real bad oil leak coming from behind the crankshaft pulley

I pulled the pulley off, is there suppose to be a seal behind the pulley?

oK, you have an upright Type 1 engine. Now post a picture of the front side of the crank pulley.

The screw pulley system works amazingly well, it's hard to understand how it could leak much at all there unless it's overfilled with oil. Aluminum pulley or not.

What is that rusty stuff in there on the slinger? Is the slinger messed up? Rusted out? Or is that some old gasket material someone tried because they did not have the pulley nut seated tight?

What is a slinger

This is an oil slinger.

It is attached to the end of the crank and the cupped side faces forward(toward the flywheel).

Good Luck.

Actually I think that is wrong.... Cup (concave) faces to rear (v belt pulley) .. But in any case crank will not go in case (easily - binds up on assembly) if slinger is faced wrong way....

According to Danwvw's graphic...

Leak could also be caused by drain path for slinger chamber is blocked...
