I'm travelling down the west coast from Canada in my 71 high top. I developed a slap on the 3-4 cylinder pair in San Francisco. I tightened the lower head bolts (really loose) but I'm still have a dead #4 and a massive, loud exhaust leak. My plan is to pull the engine to assess and tighten the head nuts (one may be stripped - case savers).
I have tools and spare parts but i need a friendly driveway with a jack and maybe some helpful advice.
I'm arriving in LA tonight (Sunday) on 3 cylinders so that I have access to parts tomorrow.
Can anyone help?

Ping Robbie and see if he in SoCal - user aisab

LA is a big place - two people in LA can be three hours apart by car.

If you can make it here I can help. I'm in San Diego near Sea World. I have two used engines in my garage. Both run but are just long blocks right now. One has 80 psi in #1 cylinder.

Oh no. Its not been the greatest day. Got turned around because of the mud slides on 101. I'm now in Santa Maria and it feels like the 3-4 head is about to fall off. I have no power for going up a mountain. I tightened the lower head nuts again and I was able to spin the the rearmost one with my fingers. That stud is definitely stripped.
I'm basically running on two cylinders.
It seems driving is no longer an option. I'm looking for a rebuilt or good used long block nearby and work space to do the swap
Or,
So far have a generous offer of work space and available parts/engine in San Diego which is a long tow but will get me back on the road.

If anyone has any helpful suggestions, I'm all ears.

I thought you were headed south. How did you go from Santa Barbara back birth to Santa Maria?

Johann made an excellent decision. Dancing Dancing

It's a long tow, but there's no one better to get him back on the road in good working order. Good luck, Aeromech!

we are supposed to get rain here (Sacramento) tonight then some this weekend and next. Nothing heavy so y'all should be Ok. Bringing the bus to Gary and maybe Robbie is the best solution. Really. I'd just pull the engine apart and rebuild the whole thing while in San Diego. Normally T1 engines will last about 40,000 to 80,000 miles in a bus depending how hard it is pushed.

I got a full trailer to load the bus on and a uhaul to pull it. I didn't know uhaul had one but when i went to pick up the two wheel dolly there it was. I'm staying the night in LA and heading to aeromech's tomorrow after dropping a passenger at LAX.
Its really hard to get down the coast. I've been running into people who can't get to work for days because of the mudslides. A rough time for many people. I'm lucky that it's just a bit of logistical affecting my vacation.
Anyway, looking forward to some good wrenching time over the next few days and then heading down Baja with a fresh powerplant.
As aeromech stated, slave labour is welcome and will be rewarded with cold beer.
I could also use an aux battery if anyone has an ideas that won't break the wallet too bad. I have a 100W solar panel to keep it all charged.
