I am new to the vw world so pardon my ignorance. Is there some significance to the ropes on the bumpers? And what are the various extra red and yellow lights on the bumpers?

*** Never mind. I figured out that they are fog lights. But what about the ropes?

Not original...probably something a previous owner added for some reason.

BTW, photos are a big help when asking about stuff like this.

The rope is borrowed from the rat rod look. It serves no purpose other then to give VW`s a bad name.

Ropes used to be wrapped around for convenience during the early days of off-roading. No winch? Unwind the rope on your bumper and yank/tow the car out.

It trickled through trucks to everything- I'd say on split buses first in the VW world. As said, if it's on a bug it would be a ratrod looking beetle.

Rope? Decoration only ....or should be. There is absolutely NO strength in VW bumpers (bug, bus, or anything else) for towing anything, or for pulling a vehicle that is stuck, etc. #1 way to ruin a VW bumper.
